Alcohol and gender-based violence: what does the evidence tell us?

How does harmful alcohol use contribute to gender-based violence and interpersonal violence?

In a recent interview, Dr Leane Ramsoomar of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and a member of the CHASE-SAteam, discusses what the evidence tells us โ€” and what can be done.

๐Ÿ”น Research consistently links harmful drinking, particularly heavy drinking by men, with a higher likelihood of perpetrating intimate partner violence.

๐Ÿ”น Alcohol can amplify existing risk factors, including gender inequality, trauma, poverty and learned patterns of violence.

๐Ÿ”น When alcohol is involved, violence can become more frequent, severe and unpredictable, increasing the risk of serious injury.

๐Ÿ”น Reducing alcohol-related harm requires more than awareness campaigns. Leane highlights the importance of measures addressing the availability, affordability and marketing of alcohol, alongside accessible prevention and treatment programmes.

๐ŸŒ What shapes our health โ€” and who gets to shape the solutions?

From the to***co and alcohol industries to fossil fuels, food and pesticides, commercial activities can influence the conditions in which we live and our health outcomes.

Understanding these influences is an important step towards building healthier communities. But how do we move from understanding the problem to taking action?

This was one of the key questions explored at the relaunch of the Global Commercial Determinants of Health Action Network (GCAN), held in Cape Town on 5 September 2026.

Researchers, advocates and partners came together to explore how commercial actors shape health, share insights from different sectors, and discuss opportunities for collective action across Africa and beyond.

A key message from the discussions: communities must be active participants in shaping solutions, not simply recipients of information.

Participants highlighted the importance of making research accessible, strengthening community-led advocacy, building coalitions and developing tools to better understand and monitor the influence of commercial actors.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to reflect on the GCAN Cape Town Statement and identify priorities for the networkโ€™s future work.

At CHASE-SA, we recognise the importance of collaboration between researchers, communities and advocates in translating evidence into action on alcohol-related harm.

What if the communities most affected by alcohol-related harm helped shape the solutions?

Thatโ€™s at the heart of CHASE-SAโ€™s approach. ๐Ÿค

Our Gauteng Community Advisory Panel recently came together to reflect on project progress, emerging research findings and opportunities for community-led action on alcohol-related harms.

The conversation reinforced an important message: meaningful change takes collaboration between communities, researchers, policymakers and organisations.

Together, the panel explored ways to:
โœ… Share emerging research findings with communities
โœ… Develop an Alcohol Action Manual for community use
โœ… Strengthen advocacy skills through future training
โœ… Build partnerships that can support meaningful policy and social change

By bringing lived experience and research evidence together, CHASE-SA is working to ensure that knowledge and solutions are relevant to the communities they are intended to serve.

A big thank you to our Community Advisory Panel members, community activators, researchers and partners for helping turn evidence into action. ๐ŸŒ

Strengthening community voices in alcohol policy

Weโ€™re proud to support our CHASE-SA partner, the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance, at .

Yesterday, SAAPA South Africa Project Associate Makhosazana Ndlovu presented on efforts to monitor liquor licence applications and strengthen communitiesโ€™ participation in alcohol licensing processes.
Understanding where and how alcohol is made available is an important part of understanding alcohol environments and their impact on health and safety.

Well done to Makhosazana and the SAAPA team for bringing this important work into the Safety 2026 conversation.

Weโ€™re pleased to be part of , where safety professionals, researchers and industry stakeholders are coming together to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships and explore new approaches to prevention.

For CHASE-SA, these conversations are an opportunity to bring evidence on alcohol environments and alcohol-related harm into a broader discussion about health, safety and safer communities.

If youโ€™re attending, come and find us at the CHASE-SA exhibition stand to learn more about our research and emerging findings.
