What is school readiness?
School readiness is a measure of how prepared a child is to succeed at school and involves two types of readiness: a readiness to learn (which is continuous) and a readiness for school (which is associated with a fixed age).
Here are some things to prepare before your child heads into the new school year:
1. Emotional: The child must have some ability to control their emotions and be reasonably independent, confident, and able to adapt to being separated from their current caregiver.
2. Physical: Your child should be able to do some physical activity such as running, walking, ball catching, etc. Prepare your child for school by teaching them how to hold and use pencils, cutlery, scissors, etc. They must also be able to use the bathroom unassisted.
3. Social: This is about how your child interacts with others and their environment. They should be able to interact with other kids, exchange toys with them, and quickly join and fit in with a new group.
4. Language development: This includes their vocabulary, speaking and listening skills. Your child must be able to have a conversation in their home language. They should be able to express themselves so that others can understand. Know basic numbers and letters, understanding the concept of time (before, after, day, night, etc.) and must be able to follow and remember the details of stories.

A new school year can stir up some pretty big emotions in your kid. They're facing a totally new environment, peer group shifts, and a disruption to their summertime rhythm…all while learning something new all day everyday
Here are some conversation topics to help you connect with your kid at the beginning of a new school year:
1. Learning isn't always easy. Prepare your kids to expect not to know every answer. Remind them that they won't be good at everything right away, and that school is the place they're meant to be challenged and learn something new.
2. A fear of fitting in. Your kid may have spent last year in the familiarity of home. Or their friend group dynamic may have changed. remind them they are great the way they are and that they already have a place where they belong, and that’s right at home.
3. Focus on what is in your control. There will be many things your kid will face at school that they have no influence over, but what they can control is their effort and how they treat other people.Try use this time to talk to them about what the value of kindness, respect and conflict is.
