🏉 “I've been told my eye is shaped like a rugby ball.”
If you've ever been told this after being diagnosed with astigmatism, you're definitely not alone! 😂
But don't worry — your eye isn't actually shaped like a rugby ball. 🏉👁️
So, what is astigmatism?
Normally, the front surface of the eye (the cornea) is relatively evenly curved, allowing light to focus neatly onto the retina.
With astigmatism, the curvature is different in different directions. Think of it as being more curved in one direction than another, rather than perfectly round.
Because of this, light doesn't focus to one sharp point on the retina, which can result in:
👁️ Blurry or distorted vision
🤕 Headaches or eye strain
😑 Squinting to see clearly
🌙 Difficulty seeing clearly at night
And here's the important part: astigmatism is very common and can usually be corrected with prescription lenses.
So, if your optometrist tells you that your eyes are shaped like rugby balls…
