This past weekend we kicked off our Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder course and what an incredible turnout!

The course booked out completely, with a full house of dedicated learners diving into everything from CPR, AED, BVM to secondary survey techniques and hands-on practical scenarios.

From working through Module 8 (Secondary Survey) to getting hands-on with chest compressions on the mannequins outside, this group has shown real commitment to mastering life-saving skills from day one. 💪

Most business owners have never read Section 37 of the OHS Act.

Here's why that's a serious problem.

Section 37 is the part of the OHS Act that determines who gets held personally liable when something goes wrong on a non-compliant worksite.

The short version: as a director or senior manager, YOU can be held criminally liable — not just fined, but prosecuted — if an employee is seriously injured or killed on a site where preventable OHS gaps existed.

"But I didn't know there were gaps."

Section 37 doesn't accept ignorance as a defence. The duty of care is on the employer. Always.

"But we have insurance."

Insurance doesn't cover criminal prosecution. And it doesn't cover DoL fines. Those are personal.

Here's what Section 37 actually means in practice:

👉 If your SHE Rep was never formally appointed in writing — you are liable.
👉 If an employee without a valid medical certificate is injured at work — you are liable.
👉 If a fire extinguisher failed because it was overdue for servicing — you are liable.
👉 If your Safety File was a downloaded template that didn't reflect your actual site — you are liable.

This isn't a scare tactic. It's legislation.
