Children generally want to do well.
When children struggle emotionally, academically, or behaviourally, it is important to look beneath the behaviour rather than reacting only to what we see on the surface.
What may appear as:
• laziness
• avoidance
• emotional outbursts
• “not listening”
• defiance
• shutdowns
may actually reflect overwhelm, anxiety, working memory difficulties, emotional dysregulation, learning difficulties, or exhaustion from trying to cope.
Children do not always have the words to explain what they are experiencing.
When adults shift from asking:
“What is wrong with this child?”
to:
“What is making things difficult for this child?”
support becomes more effective, relationships improve, and children feel safer, more understood, and more capable.
Understanding behaviour changes outcomes.
