Origan of “Socks4Doc”

The movement of “Socks4Docs” was founded in 2017 by Dr. Geoff Toogood, a cardiologist from Melbourne, Australia.
Dr. Toogood, who has personal experience living with depression and anxiety, arrived at work one morning wearing odd-coloured socks. The reason was entirely mundane: his new puppy had chewed up his other pairs.
Instead of colleagues asking if he was okay, Dr. Toogood heard them whispering behind his back, suggesting he was "failing again" or "going crazy". This experience highlighted a serious issue for him: the intense stigma surrounding mental health in the medical profession, where struggling is often seen as a personal failure.
He realised that if he, a doctor who was actually feeling well that day, was being judged for a simple wardrobe mishap, then others who were silently suffering would never feel safe asking for help.
Mission and Impact
Dr. Toogood created Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day to directly fight this stigma. The mission is to make it "okay for a doctor not to be okay" and to encourage open conversations about psychological wellbeing in the healthcare community.
• Annual Event: It is held on the first Friday of June each year.
• Simple Action: Doctors, nurses, healthcare staff and anyone wanting to support healthcare professionals are encouraged to wear bright, colourful, or mismatched socks to work.
• Powerful Message: This light-hearted act serves as a visible reminder to check in on colleagues and signals that seeking help for mental health challenges is not a sign of weakness, but a strength.
What started as a local initiative in Victoria, Australia, has since grown into a global movement, with participants in countries like the US, Canada, South Africa, and Singapore.
Crazy Socks for Docs Day takes a light-hearted action (fun socks) and uses it to address a very serious subject (doctor mental health). It serves as a powerful reminder that healthcare workers need care and compassion too.

To the nurses who work quietly, tirelessly, and without applause, we see you, we thank you, and today we celebrate you. You are the steady hands and kind hearts behind so many healing moments, often going unnoticed but never unappreciated. Thank you for every sacrifice, every smile, and every shift.
