The near-sacredness—as I call it—of this work remains discoverable again and again in the precious delicacy that characterises all things pure, brittle, and fleeting. The brittle thing of beauty here is a client's act of exposing exactly that which they most desperately want to keep hidden, to a person they trust to know how to look, what to see, and then how to reflect back what they see. If done with understanding and care, what can follow is the momentary extinguishing of the blinding pe*******on of a thousand stage lights hungry to find, rip into, and persecute the subject for their illuminated flaws. But then something else happens: therapist and client together might unexpectedly find something completely new and previously undiscovered. What they observe is a gentle, soft, and warm glow of something which in that moment is at once not-quite-yet and no-longer-not. The source of the warm, soft, glow is a promise, a potentiality, a continuity. The soft glow of warm light is comforting, as when seen from underneath a closed door or through a key hole, because it signals that someone is home. That someone is you. This you is in a state of continuity, and includes what you may have been but no longer are, what you currently are but someday might no longer be or may continue being, and what you have not yet been but may currently be becoming or may someday become.
The above is the very essence of the work as I see it, and it is at times hard not to be awe-struck by the magnitude of it. The work allows one to discover with a client their self-in-becoming.
