🌸 Happy Women’s Day 🌸

Today we celebrate the women who inspire us, support us, challenge us, and remind us of the strength we carry within ourselves.

To the women who are building careers, raising families, caring for others, chasing dreams, overcoming challenges, and showing up even on the difficult days—we see you. ❤️

Being a woman means carrying so many roles, responsibilities, and emotions, often while quietly supporting everyone around you. Today is a reminder that you also deserve care, kindness, rest, and compassion.

May we continue to celebrate women not only for what they achieve, but for who they are—their courage, resilience, kindness, creativity, and the impact they have on the world around them.

Here’s to the women who came before us, the women standing beside us, and the generations of women who will follow.

🌷 Keep shining. Keep growing. Keep taking up space. You are valued, you are capable, and you are enough.

Happy Women’s Day from all of us at

✨ **C-Section Recovery Tip: Don't Forget About Your Scar**

Once you're **6 weeks postpartum**, your wound has healed, and all scabs have fallen away, it's time to start caring for your scar. Scar massage can play an important role in your recovery by improving tissue mobility and helping reduce long-term discomfort.

💚 **Benefits of scar massage:**
✔️ Improves flexibility of the scar tissue
✔️ Reduces tightness and sensitivity
✔️ Helps prevent adhesions (scar tissue sticking to underlying tissues)
✔️ Supports comfortable movement as you heal

✨ **How to perform scar massage:**
• Apply a small amount of oil or moisturiser to the area.
• Using your index and middle fingers, gently massage over the scar.
• Use small circular motions as well as up-and-down and side-to-side movements.
• Apply firm but comfortable pressure—you shouldn't be in significant pain.
• Start with **5 minutes a day** and gradually increase the duration as the area becomes less sensitive.

🌸 If you're unsure where to start, a physiotherapist can assess your scar and provide specialised scar therapy, including manual scar massage and laser therapy where appropriate, to support your recovery.

👶💚 **New Mum Tip: Protect Your Back**

Caring for a newborn involves a lot of lifting, bending, feeding, and carrying—which can quickly take a toll on your back. Looking after your body is just as important as looking after your baby.

✨ Here are a few physiotherapist-approved tips to help reduce back strain:

✔️ **Brace your core** before coughing, sneezing, lifting your baby, or changing positions. A physiotherapist can teach you how to activate your core safely after birth.

✔️ **Support your lower back** while changing nappies by placing one foot on a small step or box. Alternate legs every few minutes to reduce pressure on your spine.

✔️ **Avoid bending and twisting at the same time.** Instead, turn your whole body by moving your feet and keep your back as straight as possible.

✔️ **Choose the right height.** Whenever possible, use a changing table or surface that allows you to stand upright instead of bending over for long periods.

✔️ **After a Caesarean birth**, avoid lifting anything heavier than **5 kg** during the first **6 weeks**, unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider. This gives your incision and core muscles time to heal.

💚 Small changes to your daily routine can help prevent aches and pains, making it easier to focus on what matters most—enjoying time with your little one.

💙 Living with a rheumatic condition doesn't mean living with constant pain.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in helping people with rheumatic diseases stay active, reduce pain, and maintain their independence. While medication helps manage inflammation, physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement, strength, and function.

How can physiotherapy help?

✔️ Pain relief – Treatments such as TENS, therapeutic ultrasound, laser therapy, and heat or cold therapy can help reduce pain and muscle tension.

✔️ Strengthening muscles – Strong muscles provide better support for your joints, reducing stress on the affected areas and improving stability.

✔️ Hydrotherapy – Exercising in water reduces the load on painful joints, making movement more comfortable while improving strength and mobility.

✔️ Manual therapy – Hands-on treatment techniques can help improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and increase flexibility.

✔️ Posture and movement training – Learning the correct posture, breathing techniques, and body mechanics can help reduce pain and improve everyday movement, particularly for people with spinal conditions.

Physiotherapy also helps prevent the long-term effects of inactivity, including muscle weakness, reduced fitness, and loss of bone strength.

Recovery doesn't end in the treatment room. Regular exercise, healthy movement habits, and learning how to manage flare-ups are all essential parts of living well with a rheumatic condition.

The goal isn't just to reduce pain—it's to help you move more freely, stay independent, and continue doing the things you love.

🤱 **Breastfeeding Tip: Comfortable Positioning Makes All the Difference**

A good breastfeeding position doesn't just help your baby latch well—it also helps protect your neck, shoulders, and back from unnecessary strain.

✨ Here are a few simple tips:

💚 Sit in a comfortable, upright position with your shoulders relaxed.

💚 Bring **your baby to your breast**, rather than leaning your body forward. This helps prevent neck and back pain during feeds.

💚 Use pillows to lift and support your baby so you aren't carrying their full weight in your arms. Your shoulders and arms should stay relaxed throughout the feed.

💚 Support your baby **behind the neck and shoulders**, not by pressing on the back of their head. This allows your baby's head to tilt back naturally, encouraging a deeper, more comfortable latch.

A comfortable position means a happier feeding experience for both you and your baby. If you're experiencing pain during breastfeeding, don't ignore it—small adjustments can make a big difference.

🤱 **Breastfeeding Tips for the First Few Days**

The first milk your body produces is called **colostrum**—often referred to as "liquid gold." Although it's produced in small amounts, it's packed with nutrients, antibodies, and proteins that help protect your newborn and support their developing immune system.

✨ **Feed often**
A newborn's tummy is tiny (about the size of a cherry), so they need to feed frequently. Breast milk is digested quickly, meaning babies usually need a feed every **2–3 hours**, or whenever they show early hunger cues such as:
👶 Bringing their hands to their mouth
👶 Rooting or searching for the breast
👶 Sucking on their fingers
👶 Clenched fists
👶 Crying (a late hunger cue)

Remember—the more your baby feeds, the more your body is stimulated to produce milk.

💧 **How do you know your baby is getting enough milk?**

✔️ **Wet nappies:** Expect one wet nappy for each day of life during the first few days. Once your mature milk comes in, your baby should have around **5–6 wet nappies every 24 hours**.

✔️ **Dirty nappies:** During the first week, the number of dirty nappies generally matches your baby's age in days. After day six, at least one bowel movement a day is common, although healthy breastfed babies may vary considerably after six weeks.

💚 **If latching is difficult...**
Hand expressing a small amount of colostrum and offering it with a **sterilised teaspoon** can help ensure your baby receives those valuable nutrients while you're working on breastfeeding. Continue offering the breast at each feed, and don't hesitate to ask a **lactation consultant** or your healthcare team for support.

Every breastfeeding journey is different, and asking for help is a sign of strength—not failure. 💚

❤️ **Physiotherapy for Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD)**

Living with **Rheumatic Heart Disease** doesn't mean you have to stop being active—it means exercising **safely and with the right guidance**.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a specialised physiotherapy programme designed to help improve your heart health, rebuild strength, and restore confidence in your daily activities.

💚 **How can physiotherapy help?**

✔️ **Supervised aerobic exercise** – Gentle activities such as walking or cycling help improve cardiovascular fitness while your heart rate and symptoms are carefully monitored.

✔️ **Strength training** – Light resistance exercises help rebuild muscle strength and reduce the muscle loss that can occur with long-term heart conditions.

✔️ **Breathing exercises** – Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing and inspiratory muscle training can improve lung function, reduce breathlessness, and make everyday activities easier.

✔️ **Functional rehabilitation** – Learn how to safely return to daily tasks like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and other household activities without placing unnecessary strain on your heart.

🩺 **Your safety comes first**
Every cardiac rehabilitation programme is individually tailored. During your sessions, your physiotherapist closely monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and symptoms to ensure you're exercising at the appropriate intensity.

If you've recently had **heart valve repair or replacement surgery**, your rehabilitation plan will also protect your healing sternum while helping you regain your strength safely.

❤️ Recovery is a journey—and with the right support, you can improve your endurance, regain independence, and return to the activities you enjoy with confidence.

🤱 **Breastfeeding & Physiotherapy | Part 2**

Many new mothers experience challenges while breastfeeding, but early treatment can often prevent more serious complications.

✨ **Common concerns include:**
• Breast engorgement (breasts becoming overly full, swollen, and tender)
• Blocked milk ducts
• Mastitis (an infection of the breast tissue that may cause pain, redness, fever, and flu-like symptoms)

If left untreated, these conditions can become more severe and may even require medical intervention.

💚 **How physiotherapy can help**
Physiotherapists can use evidence-based treatments to relieve pain, improve milk flow, and support recovery. Depending on your needs, treatment may include:
✔️ Therapeutic ultrasound
✔️ Gentle soft tissue techniques
✔️ Dry needling (when appropriate)
✔️ Education on positioning and feeding techniques
✔️ Advice on reducing discomfort and preventing future problems

✨ **Simple ways to help prevent breastfeeding issues**
• Ensure your baby has a good latch.
• Empty the breast fully during each feed or by expressing if needed.
• Avoid tight or restrictive bras.
• Change feeding positions regularly.
• If you notice a blocked duct, warm showers and gentle massage before feeding may help.

⚠️ If you develop increasing pain, redness, fever, or symptoms don't improve within 12–24 hours, seek advice from your physiotherapist, GP, or obstetrician as soon as possible.

Remember—you don't have to struggle through breastfeeding alone. Support is available, and early treatment can make all the difference. 💚

❤️ Rheumatic Heart Disease Awareness Week ❤️

Did you know that a simple untreated sore throat can sometimes lead to serious heart damage?

Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) develops when a Group A Streptococcal (strep) throat infection is left untreated, triggering an abnormal immune response known as rheumatic fever. Over time, this can permanently damage the heart valves, affecting the heart's ability to pump blood effectively.

💔 Why is awareness so important?
• RHD is one of the leading acquired heart diseases in children and young adults worldwide.
• It disproportionately affects people living in low- and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare may be limited.
• Hundreds of thousands of lives are lost each year from a disease that is largely preventable.

✨ The good news? Prevention is possible.
✔️ Seek medical attention for a persistent sore throat, especially in children.
✔️ Complete the full course of antibiotics if a strep throat infection is diagnosed.
✔️ Attend regular follow-up appointments if you've previously had rheumatic fever or Rheumatic Heart Disease.

❤️ Early diagnosis saves lives. Regular monitoring and appropriate treatment can help prevent complications such as heart failure and reduce the need for complex heart surgery.

At Monique Bergh Inc. Physiotherapists, we support patients with heart conditions through individualised cardiac rehabilitation programmes, helping improve strength, endurance, confidence, and quality of life.

Together, we can raise awareness, encourage early treatment, and protect heart health.

🤱 **Breastfeeding & Physiotherapy | Part 1**

Breastfeeding is one of the best ways to nourish your baby, but it can also place unexpected strain on a new mother's body. Physiotherapy can help make the experience more comfortable by improving posture, reducing pain, and managing common breastfeeding challenges.

✨ **How breastfeeding works**
Every time your baby feeds, your body releases hormones that stimulate milk production and help the milk flow. The more effectively your baby feeds, the more milk your body is encouraged to produce.

✨ **Good positioning matters**
A comfortable feeding position benefits both you and your baby.

✔️ Bring your baby up to your breast rather than leaning forward.
✔️ Use pillows to support your baby so you're not carrying their full weight.
✔️ Keep your neck, shoulders, and back relaxed.
✔️ Try different feeding positions, such as cradle hold, football hold, or side-lying, to find what works best.

Poor posture during feeds can contribute to neck pain, back pain, shoulder tension, and even make latching more difficult.

A physiotherapist can help you improve your feeding posture, reduce discomfort, and prevent unnecessary strain while caring for your little one.

💚 Stay tuned for **Part 2**, where we'll discuss common breastfeeding problems and how physiotherapy can help.
