DBT Skills Cards: The How Skills in DBT are the gentle yet powerful framework that shapes the quality of our mindfulness practice and helps us build a life worth living.

In Dr Marsha Linehan’s model, the “What” skills show us what to do, while the three “How” skills — Nonjudgmentally, One-Mindfully and Effectively — teach us how to bring mindfulness to life with wisdom and kindness.

Nonjudgmentally
Let go of labelling experiences or yourself as good or bad. Approach what is with a kind, curious attitude. This reduces the extra suffering we often add through harsh self-judgement and frees energy for wise responding.

One-Mindfully
Focus on one thing at a time with your full presence. In a world of constant distraction, this skill improves the quality of whatever you are doing and helps reduce overwhelm.

Effectively
Focus on what actually works. Let go of needing to be “right” and choose the skilful action that moves you toward your goals and values, even when it feels hard.
When practised together, these skills create a powerful loop of kind awareness, focused attention and wise action.
At Glenbrook Practice, we weave the How skills into every DBT-THRIVE adult programme, the DBT-STEP-UPP teen programme, and our facilitator training.

With warmth and hope,
Jonathan & the Glenbrook Practice team

🌱 Ready to Build a Life Worth Living? Join DBT Thrive – In Person at Glenbrook Practice!
Starting 07 July, an engaging eight-week DBT skills-based programme designed specifically for adults.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr Marsha Linehan, offers a proven set of practical skills to help you reduce suffering, increase your sense of control, and create a life that feels truly worth living. This in-person group programme combines structured skills training, guided practice, and supportive discussion in a safe, validating environment – no prior experience is required.

The Four Core DBT Modules You’ll Master:
🧘 MindfulnessMindfulness is the foundation of all DBT skills. These skills teach you to observe and describe your experiences in the present moment without judgment, to participate fully, and to do so one-mindfully and effectively. Practising mindfulness helps you access Wise Mind, the balanced synthesis of your emotional mind and reasonable mind, so you can respond to life’s challenges with greater awareness and intention rather than reacting on autopilot. In sessions, you will engage in guided practices that quiet the racing mind and reduce unnecessary suffering.
❤️ Emotional RegulationEmotion Regulation skills help you understand your emotions and learn how to influence their intensity and duration. In this module, you will learn to accurately identify and label emotions, reduce your vulnerability to negative emotions, increase positive emotional experiences, and change painful emotions when needed, using skills such as opposite action. These skills help you manage intense moods more effectively and build greater emotional balance in daily life.
🛡️ Distress ToleranceDistress Tolerance skills teach you how to survive crises and tolerate intense emotional pain without making the situation worse. You will learn crisis survival strategies to endure difficult moments and reality-acceptance skills to make peace with things that cannot be changed right away. The goal is to develop the ability to tolerate distress skillfully so you can move toward effective change when possible and avoid impulsive actions that create additional suffering.
🤝 Interpersonal EffectivenessInterpersonal Effectiveness skills help you communicate your needs effectively while building and maintaining healthy relationships and preserving your self-respect. You will practice specific strategies for asking for what you want, saying no when necessary, and resolving conflicts in ways that strengthen your connections with others. These tools help you navigate relationships more successfully and create the kind of connections essential to a life worth living.
