Does your child avoid reading, lose their place on the page or become frustrated during homework?

Sometimes, what looks like a lack of interest is actually a sign that reading is more difficult than it should be.

Vision involves more than seeing letters clearly. Comfortable reading also relies on skills such as focusing, tracking words across a page and coordinating both eyes.

If your child regularly struggles with reading-related tasks, an eye examination can help assess whether vision is contributing to the difficulty.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn as comfortably as possible.

🎃 Halloween Eye Safety
Halloween Should Be Scary. Your Eyes Shouldn't Be.
Costumes, dramatic makeup and coloured contact lenses can transform your Halloween look, but your eyes shouldn't be an afterthought.
Be particularly careful with:
👁️ Decorative or coloured contact lenses
✨ Glitter and loose particles around the eyes
💄 Makeup applied too close to the eye
🕷️ Sharp costume accessories
🕶️ Poor-quality novelty eyewear
Decorative contact lenses aren't simply a costume accessory. If they're not properly fitted and used safely, they can cause irritation and potentially serious eye problems.
If you're planning a Halloween transformation, make eye safety part of the costume.
And if something gets into your eye or you experience persistent irritation, pain or a change in vision, don't ignore it.
🎃 Have fun. Protect your eyes.

Stop Rubbing Your Eyes — Here's Why
Your eyes are itchy. Your first instinct? Rub them.
But that satisfying little rub isn't necessarily doing your eyes any favours.
Rubbing your eyes can introduce bacteria from your hands, increase irritation and place unnecessary pressure on the delicate structures around your eyes.
It can also make irritation feel temporarily better while leaving you tempted to keep rubbing.
Instead, try to identify what's causing the irritation.
Is it allergies? Environmental irritation? Something else?
If itchy or irritated eyes are happening regularly, an eye examination can help determine what may be causing the problem and whether further care is needed.
👁️ Your eyes deserve more than a quick rub.
📍 If persistent irritation is bothering you, speak to the team at M&M Optical in Rosebank.

World White Cane Safety Day
A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way
Today is World White Cane Safety Day, an opportunity to recognise the importance of independence, accessibility and awareness for people living with visual impairment.
The white cane is more than a mobility aid. It helps people with significant vision loss navigate their surroundings and move through the world more independently.
There are also simple things we can all do to make public spaces more accessible:
✔ Keep walkways and entrances clear
✔ Don't move someone's mobility aid without permission
✔ Give people space to navigate independently
✔ If someone needs assistance, ask before stepping in
Awareness helps create environments where everyone can move with greater confidence and independence.
Today, let's look beyond our own vision and consider the experience of those living with visual impairment.

Why Are My Eyes Watering So Much?
You aren't crying, but your eyes keep watering. Sound familiar? 👀💧
Watery eyes can happen for several different reasons.
Your eyes may produce extra tears when they're irritated by wind, dust, smoke or other environmental factors. In some cases, excessive watering can also happen when tears aren't draining properly.
You may notice it when:
💧 You're outside in windy weather
💧 You're reading or concentrating
💧 Your eyes are exposed to irritants
💧 You're experiencing irritation or inflammation
💧 Your eyes constantly feel like they need wiping
Occasional watering can be completely normal, but persistent or unexplained watery eyes shouldn't simply be something you put up with.
An optometrist can assess your eyes and help determine what may be contributing to the problem.
📍 Experiencing persistent watery eyes? Book an eye examination with M&M Optical in Rosebank.

World Sight Day
Your Vision Is Doing More Than You Think. Think about everything your eyes help you do in a single day.
You use your vision to:
☕ Pour your morning coffee
🚗 Navigate the road
📱 Read a message

🚶 Avoid obstacles
🏃 Judge movement
🌅 Enjoy the world around you
We often only appreciate our eyesight when something changes.
World Sight Day is a reminder to make eye health part of your overall health routine.
Regular eye examinations don't just help you see clearly. They give your optometrist an opportunity to monitor your vision and the health of your eyes over time.
This October, give your eyes the attention they deserve.

Why Do Your Eyes Look Different When You're Tired?
Ever noticed that your eyes look completely different after a long day?
Tiredness can affect more than just how you feel. When we're fatigued, we may blink differently, experience temporary redness or find it harder to maintain comfortable visual attention.
You might notice:
👁️ Heavy eyelids
👁️ Red or watery eyes
👁️ Difficulty keeping your eyes focused
👁️ A tired or strained appearance
👁️ Finding it harder to concentrate visually
Occasional tired eyes are usually nothing to worry about. But if your eyes regularly feel exhausted even after adequate rest, it may be worth finding out whether an underlying vision problem is contributing.
Your eyes shouldn't have to work harder than necessary.
📍 If tired or uncomfortable eyes have become part of your everyday routine, book an eye examination with M&M Optical in Rosebank.

Your Eyes Have a Blind Spot. Your Brain Fills It In.
You have a blind spot in each eye right now… and chances are, you've never noticed it. 👁️
The blind spot is the point where the optic nerve leaves the eye, meaning there are no light detecting cells in that small area.
So why don't we see a black spot every time we look around?
Your brain cleverly fills in the missing information using what it sees around the blind spot.
It's a fascinating reminder that vision isn't simply about your eyes. Your eyes and brain work together to create what you see every day.
A comprehensive eye examination looks at much more than whether you can read the letters on an eye chart. It helps assess how your visual system is functioning and monitors the health of your eyes.
📍 Looking after your vision starts with understanding it. Book your comprehensive eye examination with M&M Optical in Rosebank.

Many people don't realise how much effort their eyes are making until they experience the difference of an updated prescription.
Don't settle for "good enough" vision.
