This one is for all the Durban-based health professionals!!!

Stitched Scrubs is located in Glenwood Village Mall- on Che Guevara Road. The entrance to the shop is quite small- I know I battled to find it the first time πŸ™ˆ- so, for those like me, it's located on the 1st floor of the mall (i.e. if you walk away from the Spar and up the steps, turn left at the top of those stairs and the shop is along that passageway 🌼)

They make medical scrubs in literally EVERY colour of the rainbow!!! And different types too i.e. basic; premium; waterproof; and my personal favourite... the new female range (which has shorter sleeves, a more feminine cut and cuter details - including pockets on the bum! 😍😍😍)

They currently have basic XS jogger pants available for R50!! And some even for free!!!! (Max 2 per customer).. so my cousin and I, we're both OTs, managed to get our free joggers today ⭐️😎

Thank you Stitched Scrubs for our scrub pants! P.S. As always, this is NOT a paid post. Just sharing for information purposes and because the staff at the store are so so lovely!

It's NEURODIVERSITY WEEK at this week!!

This is honestly one of my favourite weeks of the year! It's A LOT of work, but seeing the absolute joy and excitement on the kids faces when they arrive is just the best, best thing πŸ₯°

Neurodiversity Week is run annually by the Therapy Departments at The Browns School (OT, Physio and Speech Therapy).
Each year, we choose a specific theme and then design 4 activity stations related to this theme.

Celebrating neurodiversity means we are acknowledging and accepting that everyone's brains work differently. And how wonderful is that!?! Because how boring would life be, if we all thought and viewed the world in the same way!

Sound ON! 😍πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜πŸ₯Ή

Our Physiotherapy Department provides 60 minute daily standing sessions every morning at school.

These sessions are specifically for children who are are unable to stand independently, or who require support to stand with correct body alignment.

For able-bodied people, standing seems like a really simple exercise. And we don't realize JUST HOW IMPORTANT standing is!

Standing ensures that a child/person weight bears on his/her lower limbs. This is essential to 1) keep bones strong and 2) maintain soft tissue range of movement. For children with Cerebral Palsy who may be at higher risk of hip dislocation, it also helps to prevent this.

Our Physiotherapists make these "boring" standing sessions a LOT of fun by singing songs or playing games like I-spy etc.

The videos speak for themselves πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯°πŸ˜

Neurodiversity Week planning is in full force!

This year, our theme is "Ready, Set, Safari!" πŸ˜πŸ¦’πŸ¦“πŸ¦ So we are currently doing a lot of wild animal related crafts and activities in our OT sessions.

Neurodiversity Week takes place every year at the end of the 2nd term. It is a week in which we celebrate "neurodiversity" - highlighting how everyones' brains are wired differently, and that this is what makes us all unique!

We can't wait for the SAFARI ADVENTURES to begin!!

Need to teach your child to tie their own shoelaces??

This technique is so great as it
1) repeats the same "pattern of movement" during both the 1st and 2nd part of tying i.e. cross over and go through the hole and
2) allows little hands to hold the laces more easily (by placing each shoe lace end into the top hole).

Swipe right to see a little boy learning it in our session this week! I used red laces so he could see them easily on the black background of his shoes.

To downgrade even further, you can use 2 different colour laces so that it's easy for your child to see which lace is at the front and which lace is at the back of the cross.

Happy learning!! (This child learnt in 10 minutes and was SO proud of himself!! Such a great confidence boost for kiddies!)

Another fun warm up activity working on spatial relations and directionality!

This is also helpful for training the eyes to follow a specific sequence - simulating copying words/sentences off the board in class.

Adapted these pegs by writing lower case letters on them in permanent marker.

A great way to work on fine motor function as well as letter concepts.

Depending on how you structure your activity, you can also incorporate midline crossing and left/right discrimination into the task.

Sound on!!

Loving these "bridge-making" exercises!

Both techniques work on 1. core muscle strengthening which is important for a child to be able to maintain a good, upright posture whilst seated at their desk; and 2. motor planning, in that they have to time their movements accurately so that the ball doesn't get trapped by their bodies.

And the technique in the first video works on upper limb strengthening too- which is important for the development of controlled fine motor skills, like writing.

And the best part is that the kids have SO much fun doing it!!!

This little boy has dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (often referred to as CP). This means he has fluctuating muscle tone, and that he has an excess of movement.

Although he is an absolute MACHINE in floor mobility (rolling, creeping and transitioning into low kneeling independently), he is not able to walk independently, and is therefore pushed by an adult in a manual wheelchair.

I am hopeful that we can teach this incredibly motivated dude to operate his own motorized wheelchair!! So we have started playing computer games- using a joystick in place of a mouse - as these are the same joysticks used to operate a motorized wheelchair.

With extensive practice, I am hoping he will learn to control a joystick safely and intentionally.

So.. WATCH THIS SPACE! Because this little guy is going places 😍🀩😍🀩😍
