💙 A beautiful reminder for parents of autistic children.

Parenting an autistic child comes with beautiful moments, unexpected challenges and plenty of learning along the way. What matters most is creating a child who feels safe, heard, understood and valued. 🌈

We love this reminder that parents don’t have to be perfect. They just need support, patience, understanding and a willingness to keep learning alongside their child.

💙 Support starts with noticing.

For some autistic children, knowing when and how to ask for help isn’t always easy. They may recognise that something is wrong without knowing what they need, who can help, or how to communicate it.

Instead of simply expecting a child to “ask for help,” we can teach, model, check in and provide support when they need it.

Understanding comes before expectation. 💙

💙When waiting is hard, support can make all the difference.

Waiting isn’t always easy for autistic children. Sometimes they need to be taught what waiting looks like and given something meaningful to do while they wait.

Providing a toy, activity or clear information about what is happening can help reduce uncertainty and make waiting more manageable.

Understanding the need behind the behaviour allows us to support rather than simply expect. 💙

💙 Why can asking for help be so difficult for some autistic people?

Asking for help isn't always as simple as saying, “I need help.” Some autistic individuals may struggle to recognise or understand what they are feeling, whether it is sensory overload, an emotion, discomfort or physical pain. They may not know what is wrong or how to explain what they need.

Sometimes, before we can expect a child to ask for help, we first need to help them understand what they are experiencing, how to communicate it and who they can turn to for support.

Understanding comes before expectation. 💙
