Some children love playing alone, and that's okay! Play doesn't have to look the same for every child.

Let's respect each child's interests, provide opportunities to connect, and allow them to explore and enjoy play in their own way.

✨ Different ways of playing are okay. What matters is that every child feels comfortable, supported and accepted.

💙 Look Beyond the Behaviour

What if the behaviour we see is communicating a need we haven't yet understood?

Compassion doesn't mean ignoring unsafe behaviour. It means responding with understanding, support and clear boundaries, while helping children learn safer ways to express their feelings and needs.

Together, as parents, caregivers, educators and communities, we can look beyond behaviour, lead with compassion and create safer spaces where every child feels understood, supported and accepted.

For some autistic children, hitting can be a way of communicating when big emotions become overwhelming and words are difficult to access.

Understanding the reason behind the behaviour can help us provide support, encourage emotional regulation and find safer ways for children to express their needs.

💙Did You Know? Repetition Can Help Learning 🔄

Have you noticed an autistic child wanting to watch the same video, repeat an activity, ask the same question or follow the same routine over and over again?

For some autistic children, repetition is more than doing the same thing again. It can provide comfort, support learning and make an unpredictable world feel more manageable.

✨Repetition can help children:
🔹 Strengthen learning and remember new skills.
🔹 Feel safe through familiarity and predictability.
🔹 Practise communication and understand language.
🔹 Process information at their own pace.
🔹 Regulate emotions and manage overwhelming situations.

💭 What may look like repetition could be a child's way of learning, practising or finding comfort.

Rather than automatically discouraging repetition, let's consider what purpose it serves. As parents, teachers, caregivers and support professionals, understanding the "why" behind a behaviour helps us respond with greater patience and support.

Every child is different. By recognising their individual needs, we can create more opportunities for learning, growth and well-being.

💙 We came across this beautiful piece by Anna Dominique Tribunal and wanted to share it as a reminder of an important part of autism history.

Before autism had a name, there were children who were already being observed, understood and studied.

Grunya Efimovna Sukhareva was a pioneering child psychiatrist whose work in the 1920s described characteristics that closely resemble what we now understand as autism. Her 1925 publication described six boys, and in 1927 she went on to describe girls with similar characteristics, including differences in how traits could present in females. Her work came almost two decades before the well-known publications of Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger.

What stands out about Sukhareva’s work is the importance she placed on careful observation and understanding the individual child.

Her story reminds us that behind every behaviour is a child with their own way of communicating, experiencing and understanding the world.

💙 Dysregulation isn’t something to “fix”. It’s something to support.

When an autistic person becomes overwhelmed, looking beyond the behaviour can help us understand what they may be communicating and what support they need.

Instead of asking, “How do we stop this?” we can ask, “How can I help this person feel safe and supported?”

Sometimes the most helpful response is less control and more calm, space, patience and understanding.
