Parents, if you notice a small boil or swelling on your child’s gum, please don’t ignore it. A dental boil, or abscess, is usually a sign that there is an infection around a tooth or in the gum.

You may also notice toothache, pain when chewing, bad breath, an unpleasant taste, facial swelling or even a fever. Even if the bump looks small, the infection underneath may still need treatment.

And to my little patients — if your tooth or gum feels sore, swollen or “funny”, please tell Mom or Dad so we can have a look and help make it feel better.

Early treatment can relieve discomfort, clear the infection and protect your child’s growing smile.

Tongue ties and lip ties can be easy to miss — but for some little ones, they may affect feeding, swallowing, speech development, oral hygiene and the way the mouth and jaws develop.

This carousel helps parents understand what a tongue tie and lip tie are, some of the signs to look out for, and when it may be worth having your child assessed.
Not every visible tie causes a problem or requires treatment. What matters is how well your child’s tongue and lips are actually functioning.

The way your child breathes matters more than you may realise.

Nasal breathing helps filter and warm the air, supports restful sleep, encourages relaxed lip posture and plays an important role in healthy oral and facial development.

Persistent mouth breathing, on the other hand, may be linked to dry mouth, chapped lips, snoring, restless sleep, a higher risk of cavities and changes in jaw and facial growth.

An open mouth now and then is normal — but if your child regularly sleeps with their mouth open, snores, seems tired despite sleeping, struggles with focus, or constantly breathes through their mouth, it may be worth having it assessed.

As a pediatric dentist, I often remind parents that teeth grinding during sleep is not always something to simply “wait out.”

A little grinding can happen from time to time, but when it becomes frequent or your child starts waking up with jaw pain, headaches, facial tightness, sensitive teeth or restless sleep, it may be a sign that their teeth, jaw muscles and bite are under repeated pressure while they sleep.

At PeTeeth Dental Studio, we gently assess what may be contributing to the grinding — from tooth wear and bite changes to airway clues, mouth breathing, snoring, stress, screen-time routines and other habits that can affect sleep and oral health.

Early checks are so important because they help us protect little smiles, guide parents with the right advice and prevent small concerns from becoming bigger ones.
