First TEVAR performed at JMH City Hospital.

JMH City Hospital recently achieved a significant milestone with the very first procedure of a TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair) by Specialist Vascular Surgeon, Dr Vuyo Ntola.

A TEVAR is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure used to treat descending thoracic aortic conditions such as injury, dissection and aneurysm. Traditionally, access is gained through a groin incision, allowing wires and catheters to be advanced to the area of treatment. The procedure requires advanced skill in wire and catheter manipulation as well as precise interpretation of intraoperative radiological imaging (angiography).

The patient presented at JMH City Hospital with massive hemoptysis (coughing up blood from the lungs or lower respiratory tract) and severe chest pain. A CT angiogram confirmed the presence of a large descending aortic aneurysm. Dr. Ntola performed a TEVAR in this case, by carrying out the intervention percutaneously, without the conventional groin incision and using a closure device at the access site.

The procedure was successful and the patient experienced a smooth recovery. Within five days, the patient was discharged and both the patient and their family expressed satisfaction with the outcome and care provided by the JMH City Hospital medical team.

This accomplishment also demonstrates the competency of our theatre and ICU staff, who provided excellent organization and support throughout the process.

Procedures such as these can pave the way for broader adoption of advanced procedures, ongoing training and integration into routine practice. For our patients and communities, this milestone helps to ensure that our patients have access to cutting-edge medical technology and innovative care.
