Pink eye awareness
What is pink eye ?
Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane lining the eyelids and the whites of the eyes, causing redness, swelling, and sometimes discharge.
Symptoms:
Redness or swelling of the white of the eye or inner eyelid.
Swelling of the conjunctiva and/or eyelids.
Increased tear production, itching, irritation, or burning sensation.
Discharge (pus or mucus).
Crusting of the eyelids or lashes, especially in the morning.
Contagiousness:
Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are highly contagious and can spread easily through close contact, shared items, or touching the eyes after touching contaminated surfaces.
Prevention:
Wash your hands often, especially after touching your eyes or someone with pink eye.
Avoid touching your eyes.
Don't share personal items like towels or makeup.
Treatment:
Viral conjunctivitis typically resolves on its own within a few days to a couple of weeks.
Bacterial conjunctivitis may require antibiotic eye drops, prescribed by a doctor.
Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with antihistamine eye drops.
When to see a doctor:
If you have moderate to severe pain in your eyes.
If you have blurry vision.
If you have more sensitivity to light than usual.
If you have concerns about your pink eye.
