Hormonal changes don’t only affect how you feel - 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴.

Changes in hormone levels can affect the tissues and blood vessels inside the nose, sometimes contributing to nasal congestion, a blocked or stuffy nose and increased sinus pressure. Some women may also notice changes in their ears or hearing at different stages of hormonal change.

If you've noticed more nosebleeds lately, you're not imagining it. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘪𝘳, 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦. 𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺:
💧 Keep your nasal passages moisturised.
🏡 Use a humidifier if your home is very dry.
🤧 Avoid excessive nose blowing or picking.

If nosebleeds are happening often, are difficult to stop, or are accompanied by other symptoms, it's a good idea to have them assessed by an ENT specialist.

Snoring and sleep apnea are often mistaken for the same condition—but they're not.

While snoring is caused by restricted airflow that creates vibration in the throat, sleep apnea is a medical condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Left untreated, it can affect your sleep quality, energy levels, and long-term health.

Knowing the difference is the first step towards the right diagnosis and treatment.

Snoring is often brushed off as a normal part of sleep—but it's actually a sign that airflow is being restricted.

As you sleep, the muscles in your throat naturally relax. When the airway becomes partially narrowed, the surrounding tissues vibrate as air passes through, creating the familiar sound of snoring.

There are several reasons why this may happen, including:
• Nasal congestion or allergies
• Relaxed throat muscles
• Enlarged tonsils
• Excess tissue around the airway
• Structural differences within the nose or throat

While occasional snoring may not be a cause for concern, persistent or loud snoring can sometimes indicate an underlying ENT condition or even sleep apnoea, which should be professionally assessed.

July has always been my favourite month.

Across the Eastern Cape, the aloes come alive in spectacular bloom, transforming our hillsides into a celebration of colour and reminding us why this province is so special.

These photographs were taken during my recent trip to Komani (Queenstown), where the hills between Cathcart and Komani were covered in these magnificent plants. It's a sight I look forward to every year and one that never loses its beauty.

Each month I travel to Komani to consult at the Queenstown Specialist Rooms and perform surgery at Life Queenstown Private Hospital. It is always a privilege to care for patients in this beautiful part of the Eastern Cape while enjoying the landscapes that make our province unique.
