- Advocating and facilitating inclusion, access and economic empowerment
- Contributing to and influencing Government policies
- Changing attitudes through sensitization and awareness programs

The NCPD follows a rights-based approach within the framework of the social and human rights models of disability in its services to and in respect of persons with disabilities. The NCPD is instrumental in the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the South African White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WPRPD).

How can people with hearing loss be included in faith communities?

Language practitioners serving as lip speakers repeat the words, enabling the person with hearing loss to read their lips, body language and facial expressions. This could be someone from the congregation who has agreed to assist with communication, but is most often a family member. Professional lip-speaking practitioners are also available at a cost.

How can people with hearing loss be included in faith communities?

Some individuals with hearing loss have learned to lipread. However, the most effective distance for speech reading is 6 metres so favourable seating near the speaker will be an advantage. A speaker whose face remains expressionless is not conducive to understanding, nor is a speaker who looks the other way or whose mouth is invisible. Lighting should fall on the speakers face to facilitate speech-reading.
NOTE: not everybody with hearing loss has the ability to speech read.

Join the Disability Responsive Gender Justice Network (DRGN), a voluntary platform connecting disability, gender justice and development actors to learn together, strengthen relationships and act for inclusive change.

DRGN creates space to connect, learn and collaborate across movements so that gender justice becomes more disability-inclusive, and disability work becomes more gender-responsive.

How can people with hearing loss be included in faith communities?

Background noise, like other conversations or fractious children may cause severe restrictions. Fellow congregants can be encouraged to keep private conversations to a minimum, while many faith communities have a Parent's Room for when children become bored or mothers wish to feed their babies.

Hearing Loss LIVE! wants to help you improve your communication outcomes and is aimed at individuals with hearing impairment, but those who hear can also benefit by gaining insight and strategies for effective communication.
