Zululand Mental Health Society Zululand Mental Health Society was founded in 1968 as a non-profit by parents of children with intellectual disabilities.

Initially an auxiliary of Durban Mental Health, it established Sonskyhookie and Thuthukani Special School and Day Care Centres. This enabled parents to keep their children locally instead of sending them away. Services later expanded to include psychiatric and other disabilities, supported by social workers providing counselling.
