It’s Influenza season🤒

Influenza is a contagious disease caused by a virus. The infection is usually in the nose, throat and lungs. It kills an estimated 50 000 people worldwide every year. It is also commonly known as the flu.
People with the virus are likely contagious from about a day before symptoms appear until about 5 to 7 days after they start.

There are 3 types of Influenza – A, B, and C. Type A Influenza viruses are further typed into subtypes (Type A H1N1 is known as Swine flu)

Symptoms include:
- Headache
- Cough
- Weakness and tiredness
- Runny or blocked nose
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Aching muscles
- Chills and sweats

Because influenza is caused by a virus, antibiotics are only indicated if there is a secondary bacterial infection.
It is important for patients that have Influenza to start antiviral medication early in the disease.
