A Journey That Revealed More Than We Expected
The Journey Africa Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to every individual, organisation, volunteer, and community member who has stood with us throughout our recent Legacy Walk. What began as a journey of hope became an undeniable encounter with the realities that many South Africans continue to face every day.
Our walk was never about kilometres alone. Every step was taken with the intention of listening before speaking, witnessing before proposing solutions, and allowing communities to define their own realities. It reaffirmed a principle that has guided our work since the Foundation's inception: meaningful development begins by walking alongside the people.
Upon reaching Hlokozi Village near Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, we were confronted by the condition of Zimele Creche, an Early Childhood Development centre serving some of the village's youngest children. We found an environment where dedicated caregivers continue to serve despite infrastructure that no longer provides the safety, dignity, and learning conditions every child deserves.
The situation is not simply about a building. It is about children beginning their educational journey in an environment that places unnecessary limitations on their potential. It is about teachers who continue to serve with commitment despite having limited resources. It is about a community determined to create a better future but requiring partners willing to stand with them.
Following engagements with community leaders, educators, parents, and local stakeholders, the immediate decision has been taken to temporarily relocate the children and educators to Ntapha Community Hall. This temporary arrangement will provide a safer environment while long-term interventions are implemented.
However, temporary solutions cannot become permanent realities.
The Journey Africa Foundation is therefore committing itself to mobilising support towards the construction of a new, safe, and fully functional Early Childhood Development centre for the children of Hlokozi Village.
This initiative goes beyond replacing a structure. It is about creating a centre of learning that reflects the value and dignity of every child. We envision an ECD facility that offers safe classrooms, proper sanitation, clean water, secure play areas, adequate nutrition facilities, and an environment where children can learn, dream, and thrive.
To achieve this vision, we will launch a national mobilisation campaign that calls upon individuals, businesses, government institutions, faith-based organisations, schools, and development partners to contribute towards the rebuilding of Zimele Creche. Contributions may include building materials, professional services, financial support, educational resources, equipment, and volunteer expertise.
Mandela Day reminds us that lasting change begins when ordinary people choose to act. It is in this spirit that our upcoming community activation on 18 July 2026 seeks not only to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy but to transform that legacy into practical action for the children of Hlokozi Village.
The Journey Africa Foundation remains committed to ensuring that this project is conducted transparently, collaboratively, and in close partnership with the community. Regular updates will be provided as fundraising progresses, construction plans are finalised, and implementation milestones are reached.
Our walk has ended, but the journey has not.
The kilometres are behind us. The responsibility is now before us.
History will not remember how far we walked. It will remember what we built because we walked.
We invite every South African to become part of this journey. Together, we can ensure that the children of Zimele Creche inherit not temporary hope, but a permanent foundation for their future.
