πŸ’§ DID YOU KNOW? You can become dehydrated even on a cold, rainy day.

It’s Monday, 7 September, and Giyani is having one of those wet, cold days when all you want to do is curl up under a blanket. 🌧️πŸ₯Ά

But don't let the cold weather fool youβ€”your body still needs water.

We tend to associate dehydration with hot summer days and sweating, but you also lose fluids through breathing, urination and everyday body functions in colder weather.

When you're not drinking enough, you may experience:
πŸ’§ Dry mouth or excessive thirst
πŸ€• Headaches
😴 Tiredness and low energy
🧠 Difficulty concentrating
πŸŒ€ Dizziness or light-headedness
🚽 Darker urine or urinating less often

How much water do you need?

There isn't one perfect amount for everyone. Your needs depend on your body, activity level, diet, environment and health.

Don't wait until you're thirsty. Keep water nearby and make hydration part of your daily routine.

β˜• Warm drinks can also help you take in fluidsβ€”but remember that water remains a simple and healthy choice.

And if you're feeling unusually weak, dizzy, confused, or unable to keep fluids down, seek medical attention.

πŸŽ—οΈ DID YOU KNOW? CHILDREN CAN GET CANCER TOO.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month β€” a time to stand with children and families affected by cancer and to remind ourselves that early recognition can make a difference.

Cancer in children can sometimes look like common childhood illnesses.

Pay attention to symptoms that are persistent, unusual or getting worse, such as:
⚠️ Unexplained weight loss
⚠️ Persistent fever or night sweats
⚠️ Unusual lumps or swelling
⚠️ Persistent headaches or vomiting
⚠️ Unexplained bruising or bleeding
⚠️ Ongoing pain, especially in bones
⚠️ Extreme tiredness or weakness
⚠️ Changes in vision or a white reflection in the eye

These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer. But when something doesn't seem right or doesn't go away, don't ignore it. Have your child assessed by a healthcare professional.

πŸŽ—οΈ Every child deserves a chance to grow, dream and thrive.

πŸŽ€ DID YOU KNOW? Breast cancer can affect women of all ages.

As we reach the last day of August, we close our Women's Month by talking about a health issue that deserves our attention all year round: breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women. Knowing what is normal for your breasts and noticing changes early can make a difference.

🚩 Look out for changes such as:
A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
A change in the size or shape of the breast
Changes to the skin, such as dimpling or puckering
A change in the ni**le or ni**le discharge, particularly if bloody
Persistent pain or swelling in one breast

πŸ’— Know your breasts. Know your body.
If you notice a new or unusual change, don't panicβ€”but don't ignore it either. Most breast changes are not cancer, but they should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

And remember: breast cancer can occur without a noticeable lump, so follow recommended screening guidelines and speak to your doctor about your individual risk.

🌸 As Women's Month comes to an end, let the conversation continue.

Make your health a priorityβ€”not just in August, but every month.

🩺 Did you know?
Inflammation may be at the root of many chronic diseases.

Inflammation is a natural and important part of the body's defence system. It helps your body fight infections and repair injuries.

But when inflammation becomes chronic and persists for a long time, it can contribute to the development or worsening of several health conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and some other chronic diseases.

⚠️ The problem isn't inflammation itselfβ€”it’s inflammation that doesn't switch off.

What can help support your health?
πŸ₯— Eat a balanced diet
πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Stay physically active
😴 Get enough quality sleep
🚭 Avoid smoking
🍺 Limit alcohol
βš–οΈ Maintain a healthy weight
🩺 Have regular health check-ups

Don't ignore persistent pain, swelling, fatigue or other unusual symptoms. Early medical advice matters.

🌸 DID YOU KNOW? Heavy periods are not something you simply have to β€œlive with.”

Some women experience menstrual bleeding that is so heavy or prolonged that it interferes with everyday life.

Heavy menstrual bleeding can sometimes be linked to conditions such as fibroids, hormonal changes, endometriosis, adenomyosis, bleeding disorders or other health problems.

🚩 Speak to a doctor if you:
-Soak through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours.
-Need to change sanitary products frequently during the night.
-Have periods lasting longer than 7 days.
-Pass very large blood clots.
-Feel unusually tired, weak, dizzy or short of breath.
-Find that heavy bleeding is affecting your work, school or daily activities.

Heavy bleeding can also contribute to iron-deficiency anaemia, leaving you exhausted and weak.

πŸ’— Don't normalise suffering.
Don't be embarrassed to talk about your periods.

At Holani Medical Centre, our doctors can assess your symptoms, investigate possible causes and help you find an appropriate treatment plan.

To every mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, wife, friend, professional, caregiver, entrepreneur and community leader:
You are seen.

🩺 DID YOU KNOW? August is Women’s Month! 🌸

Welcome to Women's Month in South Africa! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ’œ
This August, Holani Medical Centre – Dr Thomas Mbombi Inc is dedicating the month to celebrating, educating, and empowering women to take charge of their health.

Too often, women put the needs of everyone else before their own. This month, we're encouraging every woman to make her health a priority.

Throughout August we'll be discussing:
🌸 Breast health and self-examinations
🌸 Cervical cancer screening (Pap smears)
🌸 Menstrual health
🌸 Fertility and reproductive health
🌸 Pregnancy and antenatal care
🌸 Menopause and hormonal changes
🌸 Mental health and stress management
🌸 High blood pressure and diabetes in women
🌸 Weight management and healthy living
🌸 Osteoporosis and bone health

Because when women are healthy, families are stronger and communities thrive.

Make August the month you finally book that check-up you've been postponing.
