How useful is it to know the private and personal life of a famous person? Recently New York Magazine did an expose of Dr Andrew Huberman, highly acclaimed neuroscientist and creator of the of The Huberman Lab podcast. Have you got past your affair ? Are you still triggered by your partner's affair that left you shattered and traumatised? Did you see a therapist together and endure the discomfort of a set process that requires resilience, heroism, tissues , compassion and commitment?

In this new 2nd edition of "Getting Past the Affair" , the authors Snyder et al, expand the types of relationships, affairs that beak hearts and reinforce their original process , a process I have been using since they published their first book . .. with additional protocols and techniques. This is not easy work for a person, a couple, a therapist. Yet not going through this process guarantees life long pain and unresolved trauma. Im fascinated by the research that shows that step parenting can be a traumatic experience. Considering how many people divorce after having children, and remarry, or get into cohabitation , it is eye opening to realise how challenging this blended family can be.

The constant push-pull from the children, the division of loyalties that the biological parent endures are some of the primary stresses a new adult experiences when entering into the new role of step parenting.

This Thursday night @8.00pm on my radio show, with Aubrey Masango, , "In Conversation with Dr Eve", Radio 702/Cape Talk, ill be talking about why sets parenting is traumatising for many people. And look at some ways to manage this particular relationship so trauma is minimised and joy enhanced.

I have become opposed to the words we automatically use to describe relationships. I feel a distinct jarring in my gut . We, as clinicians, refer to relationships as being. "healthy " or 'unhealthy" Immediately this places a value judgement of pathology as well as medicalises our very deepest most intimate connections.

I prefer that we consider relationships within the context of "safe" or "unsafe ' . And the only way we can know the difference is when we "befriend our nervous system" ,as taught by Dr Stephen Porges, creator of the Polyvagal Model . Attuning to your body will give you cues of safety or cues of danger.

We long to connect, to turn towards each other, to feel safe . We turn away when the body does not feel safe.

I invite you to tell me what makes you feel safe in your intimate relationships .

I was delighted to read a recent article in Journal of S*x & Marital Therapy (Hollenbeck) confirming that discovery of Infidelity results in extreme anger and.. trauma. Makes sense, right ? Your world is upsided, you loose your footing and usual coping mechanisms no longer work.

Loneliness is a significant mental illness. it is caused by disconnection. It happens when we feel disconnected due to. lack of safe secure connections . It is a physical and mental sensation. I invite you to intentionally consider and make a list of people who are safe connections for you. This could be life saving.

How about we get real on Valentine's Day ? How about we talk about love that is dangerous, or unrequited or taboo? Abusive love, childhood s*xual abuse, both under the guise of "Love". Q***r love is constitutionally instituted but is is it accepted by all? How about s*x work?
