It is Youth Month in South Africa.
And I want to say something directly to every young woman reading this:
Your period is not punishment. It is not 'just how it is for our family.' It is not something to push through without question.
Your menstrual cycle is your body's monthly report card on its own health.
🩸Pain that stops you going to school or work is a symptom; not a rite of passage.
🩸Cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days consistently are worth investigating.
🩸Heavy flow, bleeding between periods, severe cramping, these are signals. Not normal to endure.
You are allowed to ask questions. A good doctor will never make you feel embarrassed for asking.
If you leave a consultation without answers: seek a second opinion.
This is the conversation every young South African woman deserves to have.
