Right after birth, your provider will examine your baby. Knowing what they’re checking can make those first moments feel a little less overwhelming.

Your baby’s APGAR score is assessed at 1 and 5 minutes after birth, often while they’re still with you.

You may also see your provider checking your baby from head to toe, including their skin, mouth, hips, arms, legs, reflexes, and openings for urine and stool.

They’ll typically record measurements like weight, length, and head circumference to establish a growth baseline.

This head-to-toe assessment usually only takes a few minutes, and now you’ll know exactly why they’re checking all those tiny parts!

P.S. If you are curious, APGAR, it stands for:

A — Appearance (skin color)

P — Pulse (heart rate)

G — Grimace (reflex response)

A — Activity (muscle tone)

R — Respiration (breathing)

Each category gets a score of 0, 1, or 2, for a total possible score of 10. It’s typically assessed at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth.
