Oh just another perfect day in RIO de Janeiro!!!
booked Christ the Redeemer first thing and we went first class via the railway.
It was magnificent - the views, the statue, the insane lengths peeps will go to to get their insta shots 😂😂😂
Lord we laughed
Then I finally got a pastel, one of Brazil’s favourite street foods…been eyeing them! Flaky pastry, very yummy, choice of fillings…and an acerola juice.
We caught an uber to Largo dos Guimarães at the top of Santa Teresa.
Looooooove this area!!!
Definitely my fave in Rio (thus far!)
What started as an elite hilltop district in the 19th century has evolved into a bohemian artists’ quarter
Beautiful art EVERYWHERE
Espousing beautiful ideas - like we need more black women in positions of power
✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
Also commemorating the murder of Marielle Franco - a Black feminist, human-rights activist & city councillor. She grew up in a favela here & became one of the most prominent voices speaking against police violence & the influence of militias in Rio. She was assassinated in 2018 at just 39 💔
We really enjoyed wandering these streets and happened upon a kids-from-the-favelas (which are everywhere) brass band and then a festival for St John…or in Portuguese João in the Gloria Maria park/ Parque das Ruinas which has a super cool free museum/space.
Gloria was the first Black woman in Brazil to achieve major national prominence as a reporter. The steel-&-glass structure preserves the ruins of a mansion once owned by socialite, Laurinda Santos Lobo, whose home became a gathering place for artists & intellectuals in early 20th-century Rio.
The Museu da Chacara do Ceu around the corner is also free and houses a very cool art collection in beautiful surroundings. It was originally the home of art collector Raymundo Castro Maya.
We strolled downhill and enjoyed the Selarón Steps. It contains more than 2000 tiles from over 60 countries.
Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón worked on it for over 20 years.
Though I think whoever wrote that “passarinho nao tem instagram/ the little birdies don’t have instagram” on a wall beneath a tree full of little birds deserves an award 🪺
We ended up at the Arcos / Aqueduct in Lapa - a Rio landmark.
Word to the wise - there’s a cool yellow tram that can take you up to Santa Teresa from here 🚃
Loved the vibey street market pulsing with music and fun 💃🏾
Then some peace & quiet in the impressive Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião inspired by Mayan pyramids
Before heading back to Zona Sul for Coco frio 🥥 on Copacabana and tapioca (of course)
We took in yet more spectacular views from the fort and then made our way to Ipanema and the big rock that separates Ipanema from Copacabana ~ Arpoador ~ where everyone gathers to applaud the sunset behind the Two Brothers every sunset 🥹
I mean
What’s not to love?!
Thanks Renato
You saved the day and made my time here so easy breezy
See you in Cape Town 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
