๐ What Is Chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy, often called chemo, is a type of cancer treatment that uses powerful medicines to destroy cancer cells or stop them from growing and dividing.
Because cancer cells usually grow and divide faster than many normal cells, chemotherapy is designed to target these rapidly dividing cells.
Chemotherapy may be used to:
๐น Cure certain cancers by destroying cancer cells
๐น Shrink a tumour before surgery or radiation therapy
๐น Destroy remaining cancer cells after other treatments
๐น Slow or control cancer growth when a cure is not possible
๐น Relieve symptoms caused by cancer
Chemotherapy isn't a single medication. There are many different chemotherapy drugs and combinations, and the treatment chosen depends on the type and stage of cancer, the patient's overall health and the goals of treatment.
