South Africaʼs Constitution protects people against unfair discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. That legal protection matters deeply. It does not mean every q***r South African feels safe being known.
A person may be legally protected while still fearing rejection at home, bullying at school, discrimination at work, exclusion from their faith community or violence in public. This contradiction can create a complicated emotional reality. You may feel grateful for the rights that exist while also grieving how unevenly safety is distributed. Both can be true.
