What Therapy Really Is

Therapy is not a room.

It is not a couch,
a notebook,
or a degree hanging on a wall.

Therapy is the space between
“I’m fine”
and
“Actually, I’m not.”

It is the trembling moment
someone decides
to tell the truth.

Not the polished truth.
Not the version rehearsed for friends.

The real truth.

The one hidden beneath
smiles,
achievements,
anger,
silence,
and survival.

Therapy is not advice.

It is a lantern
held gently in the dark,
while someone finds
their own way home.

Sometimes it looks like tears.

Sometimes it looks like laughter.

Sometimes it looks like sitting quietly,
saying nothing at all,
while two people honour
a pain too deep for words.

It is the place where grief
is allowed to take up space.

Where anxiety
loses some of its power
when spoken aloud.

Where shame,
dragged into the light,
finally begins to loosen its grip.

Therapy is the slow work
of meeting yourself.

The parts you’ve hidden.
The parts you’ve forgotten.
The parts you’ve spent years
trying not to feel.

It is learning that healing
is not becoming someone new.

It is remembering
who you were
before fear convinced you otherwise.

There are no magic words.

No instant transformations.

Only courage,
returning week after week,
until broken pieces
begin to recognise each other again.

And one day,

almost without noticing,

the person who arrived
feeling lost

looks back and realises—

they were never being fixed.

They were being found. 🌿

So many parents tell me, “They know they need to turn it off… so why is it still so hard?”
The truth is: it’s not a behaviour issue — it’s a brain issue.

Young people aren’t getting “addicted to screens”.
They’re getting caught in a dopamine loop their developing brain isn’t built to manage alone.

This visual breaks down what’s really happening inside the brain — and why switching off can feel almost impossible in the moment.

Save this for later, and let me know which part stands out for you.

If you didn't catch the original screen-dopamine cycle post a link is below ⬇️
