These are snippets of therapy. The kinds of sentences that aren’t meant to comfort you. They’re meant to make something unconscious impossible to ignore.

Which one stayed with you? 🤎

One of the hardest parts of healing is realising that trauma isn’t only created by what happened to you. It’s also shaped by who didn’t step in. In many families, one parent becomes the obvious source of pain while the other becomes the “good parent” simply because they seemed safer by comparison. But children don’t just need someone who loves them. They need someone who protects them.

As adults, many people begin grieving not only the parent who caused the harm, but also the parent who couldn’t, wouldn’t, or didn’t stop it.

Holding both truths at once doesn’t erase compassion for either parent. It simply allows you to understand the full story of your childhood.

Which is harder to heal from: what was done to you, or what wasn’t done for you? 💭

Traditional therapy often asks, “What’s wrong with you?” Culturally informed therapy also asks, “What happened around you?” Because many struggles don’t begin within the individual, they begin in families, communities, histories & systems that quietly teach us who we’re allowed to be 🤎

What’s one thing you wish more therapists understood about your culture or family? 💭

Every family teaches us something about love. The question is whether we’re repeating it, resisting it or healing it 🤎

What did your family teach you that you’re only now beginning to question? ☁️

I didn’t create Conscious Psychology to simply offer therapy. I wanted to create the kind of place I wish more people had access to, one that feels warm, thoughtful & safe from the moment you walk through the door. Every little detail has been chosen with intention because healing doesn’t only happen in the therapy room.

Sometimes it begins with a smile at reception, the music, the flowers, or simply feeling like someone thought about you before you even arrived.

What’s one little thing that instantly makes a space feel safe to you? 🤎

Families don’t only pass down traditions, values, or recipes. They also pass down ways of relating to conflict, truth & love. Sometimes the legacy isn’t the arguments themselves. It’s the unspoken rule that some things are too dangerous to think about, too uncomfortable to name & too important to disrupt.

Healing often begins the moment you stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” & start asking, “What did my family teach me to believe about relationships?”

What do you think was the unspoken rule in your home growing up? 💭💭💭

Most of us spend our lives trying to get rid of uncomfortable feelings. But what if the feeling isn’t the problem? What if the real problem is the way you’ve organised your life around never having to experience it?

Our defences often protect us in the short term, while quietly creating the very life we’re trying to escape. Healing isn’t just about feeling better. It’s about no longer needing the strategies that once kept you safe.

Which one do you see in yourself? 🤎

The most difficult people to challenge are rarely the most defensive. They’re often the most certain. It’s not because they’re unwilling to grow, but because certainty feels like truth when it’s actually protection.

Therapy isn’t about convincing you you’re wrong. It’s about helping you become curious about the parts of yourself you’ve never thought to question 🤎💭

The hardest part of working with brown families is realising that two things can be true at once. Many parents loved their children deeply. They also passed on fears, expectations and emotional patterns that were never theirs to begin with.

When we only see the hurt, we lose compassion. When we only see the sacrifice, we lose honesty.

Healing doesn’t come from choosing sides, it comes from understanding that every generation is shaped by the one before it. The goal isn’t to blame our parents. It’s to recognise which parts of their story still live inside us, decide which ones deserve gratitude, and have the courage to let the rest end with us.

Which slide resonated with you the most & why? 💭

We’re often told that every generation has it easier than the one before. Maybe that’s true in many ways but easier doesn’t always mean happier. Sometimes in the pursuit of more, we quietly lose the very things that make life feel meaningful.

In fact, South Africa recently ranked among the lowest countries globally for life satisfaction in the latest World Happiness Report, despite living in the most technologically advanced era we’ve ever known.

I’d love to know what you think: What do you think we’ve lost that no amount of convenience has been able to replace? 💭
