This recent sporting moment has reminded the world of something every woman already knows: periods do not stop dreams, determination, or performance.
No athlete should have to worry about embarrassment because of a natural biological process. Instead, this moment should encourage more open conversations about menstrual health and the importance of access to menstrual products that allow women and girls to participate with confidence.
A menstrual cup is one option that can provide up to 12 hours of leak protection, allowing athletes, students, professionals, and everyday women to focus on what matters most. Reusable for up to 10 years, it is also a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Letβs continue breaking the stigma around menstruation and ensure that no woman is held back by her period.
An unbelievable display of strength and determination π₯π
Chinese marathon runner Li Meizhen was around 34 kilometres into the Hengshui Lake Marathon when her period unexpectedly began. With blood visibly running down her legs, many people would have felt unable to continue.
But Li refused to give up.
The 25-year-old battled through the pain, discomfort, embarrassment and pressure to cross the finish line in 2 hours and 35 minutes β still achieving the qualifying standard she needed.
After the race, Li said her thinking was simple: she had already made it that far, there were requirements she needed to meet, and she could not simply start over. So she carried on, even though the result was not exactly what she had hoped for.
Her resilience has received widespread praise online, and it is not difficult to understand why.
This is what true courage and perseverance look like. Nothing but respect.
