Many parents feel unsure about what to do when their child becomes overwhelmed. When the crying, shouting, or shutting down starts, the first instinct is to stop the behaviour as quickly as possible. 🤍
The challenge is that when a child’s nervous system is overloaded, they can’t listen, reason, or calm down just because we ask them to. Their body is trying to cope with more than it can manage in that moment.
This is where co-regulation becomes so important.
Co-regulation is when a calm, supportive adult helps a child move through a difficult emotional moment until they feel safer and more settled. It’s not about fixing the feeling. It’s about helping the child feel emotionally held, understood, and supported while this feeling moves through their body.
And it starts with you.
Before you try to calm your child, pause and check in with yourself. Notice if your heart is racing, if you feel stressed, or if your body is tense. Take a moment to settle your own nervous system.
Your calm presence becomes something your child can borrow.
Once you feel more grounded, simple approaches can help your child settle. You can move to their level, speak gently, name what they might be feeling, offer reassuring words, and try calming strategies together.
Children learn emotional regulation through repeated experiences of feeling safe, understood, and supported. These moments build emotional resilience over time.
