The Traditional Healers Organization is proud to celebrate Women’s Month by creating a space for women to come together, share experiences, support one another and have meaningful conversations about the issues affecting women in our communities.

On the 19th of August 2026, we will be hosting our Women’s Month programme at East Bank Hall, Alexandra Township, from 10:00 – 13:30.

Our discussions will focus on the role women play in one another’s lives, family relationships, appreciating and supporting other women, experiences of abuse and the support available to survivors of gender-based violence.

đź’ś If you are available, we warmly invite you to join us.

You do not have to be a THO member to attend. We welcome anyone who would like to participate, listen, learn and contribute to the conversation.

Women celebrating women.
Women supporting women.
Women empowering women.

On this Women’s Day, the Traditional Healers Organization proudly celebrates the remarkable women who continue to strengthen, guide and shape our organisation and our communities.

Women hold a deeply important place in our traditional healing and spiritual heritage. They carry knowledge, nurture families and communities, preserve traditions, lead, teach, heal and ensure that our cultural practices continue from one generation to the next.

Within THO, women make up the heart of our membership. From traditional healers and mentors to community leaders, organisers and practitioners, their contribution is felt across every part of our organisation.

Today, we honour the strength, wisdom, resilience and leadership of African women, particularly the women who continue to serve their communities through traditional health practice.

To all the women of THO and to women across our communities:

We see you. We value you. We honour you.

May your wisdom continue to guide generations, may your hands continue to heal, and may your voices continue to shape the future of traditional health in Africa.

Happy Women’s Day from the Traditional Healers Organization.

ROAD TO THE 2026 THO NATIONAL AGM

On 14–15 July 2026, leaders representing THO structures from across South Africa gathered at the National Head Office in Johannesburg for the first of several consultative meetings that will shape the future of our organisation ahead of the AGM in October.

The purpose of these engagements is simple: to ensure that the direction of THO is informed through consultation, transparency and collective leadership. Over the coming months, additional consultations will continue as we prepare for one of the most important AGMs in our organisation's history.

Over the two days, members reflected on the progress made since the previous AGM, received governance training on the roles and responsibilities of THO leadership structures, reviewed organisational challenges, and adopted several important resolutions aimed at strengthening the organisation. The meeting also reaffirmed our commitment to improving accountability, communication with branches, and visibility of the National Office.

Among the resolutions adopted were:

âś… The Traditional Primary Health Care (TPHC) Certification Workshop (formerly known as the 5-Day Workshop) fee will increase to R650, effective 1 September 2026, following the first price review since 2019.

âś… The Leadership & Management Training (LMT) fee will increase to R1 000, with further adjustments to be considered once the programme becomes accredited.

âś… THO will continue advancing strategic initiatives (before the AGM), including:

• The selection of a funeral benefit partner for members;
• The development of accredited training programmes;
• Stronger collaboration with healthcare stakeholders on patient referral systems;
• Greater engagement with branches and provincial structures; and
• Improved communication by distributing the THO Constitution and key governance policies to members.

As we continue this journey, we remain committed to building an organisation that is well-governed, professionally managed, culturally grounded, and responsive to the needs of THPs across South Africa.

From 21–27 June 2026, members of the Traditional Healers Organization had the privilege of participating in the 2026 Masibuyele Wilderness Trail at the breathtaking Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, alongside fellow Traditional Health Practitioners from across South Africa.

The trail, conceptualised by Makhosi Amanda Gcabashe and led by the Natural Heritage Alliance in partnership with the Wilderness Foundation Africa, Wilderness Leadership School offers abelaphi bendabuko a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature through a seven-day wilderness experience.

Far more than a hike or a safari, it is a journey of reflection, learning and renewal through exploring medicinal plants, learning about biodiversity, the sustainable use of natural resources, and our enduring role as custodians of indigenous knowledge. THO sincerely appreciates the vision behind this initiative and the space it creates for healers to reconnect with the natural world.

The sentiments that were shared by members of the organisation that attended was that the experience was both humbling and inspiring. "The quiet walks through the wilderness, conversations around the campfire, the digital detox, and the opportunity to learn alongside fellow healers and experienced wilderness guides served as a powerful reminder that our healing traditions cannot be separated from the health of our environment".

We encourage our members to follow the NHA Masibuyele Initiative's page to stay informed about future application opportunities. We hope to see many more of our members taking part in this remarkable experience in the years to come.
