San Salvador Home

San Salvador Home San Salvador is a residential home with a difference. You are not a resident, you are a part of our family.

With the highest levels of love, care and dignity, we offer women with intellectual disabilities a place to belong and a space to thrive.

Can we talk about that smile?!

You may recognise Kathy from our past posts, but we have so many lovely new followers that we wanted to introduce you to her properly 😉

Kathy has been a part of our family for almost 31 years.
She has a special way of calling you by name and smiling with delight when you go to visit - it never fails to put a smile on your own face!

Kathy spends her days at her loom (side by side with her bestie - Melissa) where she has perfected her craft over many years.
She is a very talented weaver and can complete complex patterns and designs.
At San Salvador, we have a strong value of giving back, so these items are sold to raise funds for the orphaned and financially vulnerable residents.

What else would you like to learn about our home and residents?
We’d love to hear from you!

An update from our social work intern, Carrie! This is what July has brought at Learn, Move, Connect!

What an incredible month it has been! 💙 Throughout July, we were privileged to welcome some new passionate, talented, and caring volunteers who each brought their own unique skills, creativity, and enthusiasm to our programme.

🌿 Ariella led a sensory stimulation workshop where residents explored their favourite scents through mystery boxes, celebrated their discoveries together, and learnt practical hygiene tips in a fun and engaging way.

🩷 Anna facilitated an important life skills session on personal boundaries, teaching the concepts of personal bubbles, as well as safe and unsafe touch, in an accessible and empowering

Each workshop was intentionally designed to promote cognitive learning, life skills development, sensory stimulation, physical movement, social connection, confidence, and, above all, enjoyment.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers for investing your time, kindness, and talents into our residents. Your impact extends far beyond each workshop, and we are so grateful for the difference you have made.

It is truly an honour to implement the Learn, Move, Connect programme and to witness our residents learning, growing, connecting, and having fun together .

This is what July has brought… and we can’t wait to share everything we have in store for August! Stay tuned , there’s so much more learning, moving, connecting, and smiling ahead.

We need your help now more than ever.

With the loss of our home comes the loss of community and relationships.
We are devestated that this move will mean that some residents and staff members will not be able to move with us.

But, as always, we remain hopeful and focused - we will do everything in our power to ensure that this move is completed with the highest levels of care and consideration.

If you are able to assist towards the moving costs, we would be so grateful.

A sneak peek inside our every day.
These women are a force, they never say die, they never give up, they never give in.
On days when the challenges seem insurmountable, they find courage and hope to move forward.
They love with action, they show up even when they are tired and empty.
These women are our inspiration.
And we are forever grateful.

Happy Women’s Day.

Please read what Carrie has to say!
She has been doing incredible work over the past few months (and so far, has been covering all the costs herself 💙)

Hi, my name is Carrie, and I am a third-year Social Work student at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University).

As part of my community work placement, I developed Learn, Move, Connect, a volunteer-based programme for the residents of San Salvador Home and members of The San Salvador Community Hub.

The programme brings together skilled volunteers, including a teacher, social worker, physical activity facilitator, and other community members, to provide engaging workshops that promote life skills, cognitive stimulation, physical movement, and social connection for persons with intellectual disabilities.

I am hoping to raise R700 to help cover the costs of running the programme.
The funds will go towards printing educational resources, a small sweet treat for participants, reward stickers, balls and other activity equipment needed to deliver engaging and meaningful sessions.

It has been an incredible privilege to work alongside the residents of San Salvador, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a remarkable community.
Every contribution, no matter how small, will help create opportunities for learning, growth, confidence, and connection for the residents. Thank you for supporting this initiative and helping make a lasting difference.

Kearney - Management Consulting You made our whole day!

We were lucky to have the fabulous team spend time with our residents last weekend as a part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.
This is not the first year - or the first time - that our ladies have benefitted from their time, thoughtfulness and kindness.
Their visits have left a lasting impression!

Ongoing partnerships with businesses in our community, is crucial for us to ensure our residents live the fulfilled, happy and dignified life that they deserve.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Kearny for their continued support, care and generosity. We are truly grateful for all that you have done, and all that you continue to do 💙
