Heart Awareness Month is a time to reflect on what real care for heart disease looks like, and who that care actually reaches.

When Stewart Gordon was referred to Helderberg Hospice as a palliative care patient, his family had been living in dread of losing him. What they received instead was constant communication, quick relief when symptoms became debilitating, and an interdisciplinary team who met weekly just to coordinate his care.

His sister Pat put it simply: they always knew help was only a phone call away.
That support gave the family two more years with Stewart, and when his journey came to its end, Helderberg Hospice stayed alongside them through their bereavement too.

This month we're spotlighting the kind of care that reaches a whole family, not only a diagnosis.

September is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and South Coast Hospice is showing us what community care looks like in action.

For years, they've stepped in to offer cervical screening at primary healthcare clinics in their area, clinics that are often so overburdened that screening slips down the priority list. Through their palliative care work, the team sees firsthand what happens when cervical cancer isn't caught early.

South Coast Hospice ran a cervical screening service one day a week between April 2025 and March 2026. In that time, they screened 233 women, and 31% showed abnormalities. Most of these women were HIV positive, in line with the mandate they received from the Department of Health. The hospice currently cares for 5 terminally ill patients with cervical cancer.

None of this would be possible without their Mobile Clinic, donated by the Victor Daitz Foundation, which parks alongside primary healthcare clinics to bring screening directly to the women who need it. Thanks to Sr Zola Memela for her dedicated service in making this happen.

Face-to-face courses take place based on demand (when a minimum of 15 people are signed up in a specific region), with a maximum of 25 participants per training session.
Aimed at psychosocial professionals, including social workers, psychologists, and spiritual care practitioners, this course was developed to equip learners with the appropriate skills, knowledge, and attitudes to incorporate psychosocial palliative care practices and principles.
SACSSP – 22.5 CPD points for both face-to-face and e-learning.

September is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and a cancer diagnosis reaches far past the physical. There's an emotional weight to it too, and often a spiritual one. No one should have to carry that alone.

APCC member organisations across South Africa understand this. They provide palliative care that supports people through diagnosis, through treatment and beyond, working alongside existing medical care rather than replacing it. That means looking after the whole person, not just the illness.

This month we recommit to raising awareness, reducing stigma and helping more people find accredited care sooner.

This nine-month online programme is designed for Professional Nurses and Enrolled Nurses registered with SANC and working in Palliative Care or related fields.
It offers a flexible, fully online learning experience that deepens clinical skill and communication. This course equips the nurse with the competencies required to provide quality palliative care services and education across all levels and settings of care.
Accredited by the University of Cape Town and registered at NQF Level 6, the course combines academic rigour with real-world insight.
On the website, you’ll find detailed information about the course structure, accreditation, and application process, along with testimonials, videos and photographs that illustrate the learning journey.
The next cohort runs from 4 February to 12 October 2027.

Many people are surprised to learn that palliative care can begin from the time of diagnosis, working alongside medical treatment to help manage symptoms, support families and improve quality of life.

It is care that sees the whole person, not just their illness. It recognises that physical comfort, emotional wellbeing, family support and dignity are all part of good healthcare.

At APCC, our mission is to ensure that everyone facing a life-threatening illness has access to compassionate, holistic palliative care when they need it most.

This is a ten-week, online interactive course that includes both theoretical and practical components, utilising adult learning principles.

It is designed for enrolled nursing assistants, social auxiliary workers, caregivers, and home-based carers.

The course provides a foundational overview of palliative care and introduces caregivers to its principles, ethics, and values.

Sessions will be offered based on demand, requiring a minimum of 15 participants and a maximum of 20 per training cycle.
