⚠️ Flammable Liquid Safety: 3 Rules That Save Lives ⚠️

Fuel, paint, thinners, paraffin — if you store or use them, you’re handling serious fire risk.

Stay safe and compliant:
1. Store it right – Use approved flammable cabinets or storerooms. Keep them ventilated, away from heat, direct sunlight, and below ground level.
2. Control ignition– No smoking, no open flames, no sparks within 5m. Display clear warning signs.
3. Be ready– Keep the correct fire extinguishers nearby and serviced. Make sure staff know where they are.

One mistake with flammable liquids can burn down a building. Treat it like it’s dangerous — because it is.

Topic: Start the Week Safe – It Starts With You.

Good morning team,

Before we jump into the week, let’s take 2 minutes to focus on one thing: getting home safe today and every day.

1. Check your mindset first
Most incidents don’t happen because people don’t know the rules. They happen because we’re rushed, distracted, or think “it won’t happen to me.”
Monday is when we’re shaking off the weekend and getting back into routine. That’s when focus slips.
So today, make a conscious decision: I’m working with my head in the game.

2. Do a 30-second personal check
Before you start any task, ask:
- Do I have the right PPE on?
- Is my work area clear of hazards?
- Do I know the safe way to do this task?
If the answer is “no” to any of those, stop and fix it. It’s better to take 2 minutes now than to spend weeks recovering.

3. Look out for each other
Safety isn’t a solo sport. If you see a mate cutting corners or walking into a hazard, speak up. We don’t call it out to get people in trouble. We call it out because we want everyone to go home in one piece.

Closing
This week might be busy, but no deadline is worth an injury. Take care of yourself, take care of your team, and let’s make this a safe week.

Remember: Safe work is good work.

Winter + loadshedding = biggest fire risk period in SA. Most fires come from heaters, paraffin stoves, and candles.
Key points to hammer home:
- Heaters: Leading cause of house fires in winter. 1 metre rule is non-negotiable.
- Paraffin: Only use in well-ventilated areas. Never refill while lit.
- Candles: Never leave unattended, especially during loadshedding.
- Electrical overload: Don’t plug multiple high-wattage devices into one plug during cold.

A.Winter Fire Safety
1. Metre Rule – Keep heaters 1 metre away from curtains, bedding, furniture
2. Never Unattended – Switch off heaters and candles before you sleep or leave the room
3. Ventilate– Paraffin and gas heaters need airflow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Stay warm, don’t let warmth turn into tragedy.

B. Workplace Safety Reminder
Office winter safety check:
- Are heaters placed away from paper and clutter?
- Is there a fire extinguisher that’s been serviced in the last 12 months?
- Do staff know the evacuation route if loadshedding cuts power?
A 2-minute check now prevents a disaster later.

Safe Workplace 🛡️
Productivity starts with safety – even at a desk.

This week’s 3-point check:*
1. Walkways clear?* No boxes, cables, or spills = no trips & falls
2. First aid box stocked?* Plasters, bandages, burn gel. Check expiry dates
3.Emergency exits?* Make sure they’re unlocked and not blocked

One accident can shut your business for days. Prevention takes minutes.

Theme: Winter is coming – Don’t get caught out
April/May = mornings get cold, and load shedding changes site risks.

Key Points to Discuss:

A. Cold Weather Risks
1. Hypothermia & stiffness: Cold muscles tear easier. Warm up for 2 min before lifting.
2. PPE: Jackets must not be loose near rotating machinery. No beanies that block hearing or peripheral vision.
3. Illness: Flu spreads fast in site containers. Cough into elbow. If you’re sick, report it – don’t spread it.

B. Load Shedding Hazards
1. Lighting: Stairwells, passages, toilets go dark. Use your phone torch. No running.
2. Power tools: When power returns, tools left “on” will start up. Switch off before load shedding.
3. Emergency equipment: Test emergency lights this week. Generators = carbon monoxide. Never run inside.

C. Your Action Today
1. Check your gloves – cold hands drop things.
2. Check your boots – wet mornings = slippery scaffold.
3. Know where the manual call points are if alarms don’t work during load shedding.

2. Safety Share for WhatsApp / Notice Board.

SAFETY ALERT: WINTER + LOAD SHEDDING
mornings now below 10°C. Remember:

✅ Warm up before you work– Cold muscles = injuries
✅ Lights out ≠ blackout– Use torches on stairs
✅ Switch off tools* before load shedding hits
✅ No heaters in containers unless approved – fire risk

Zero harm is the goal. Look out for each other.

*Keeping Your Workplace Safe: The Power of OHS Compliance 💡*

As employers, we have a responsibility to protect our employees and ensure a safe working environment. That's where the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act comes in.

*Why OHS compliance matters:*

- Reduces workplace accidents and incidents
- Saves costs associated with workplace injuries and fines
- Boosts employee morale and productivity

*But it's not just about compliance... it's about creating a safety culture! 🌟*

Regular audits and system checks can help identify potential hazards and prevent accidents. By having proper OHS systems in place, you can:

- Identify and mitigate risks
- Improve workplace efficiency
- Enhance your reputation and credibility

*Take the first step today! 🚀*

- Review your OHS policies and procedures
- Conduct a workplace audit to identify potential hazards
- Provide training and support to your employees

Let's work together to create a safer, healthier work environment! 💪

The Hierarchy of Controls is a framework to manage workplace hazards 🌟. Here's how it works:

1. _Elimination_: Remove the hazard entirely
2. _Substitution_: Replace with a safer alternative
3. _Engineering Controls_: Design or modify the workplace/process
4. _Administrative Controls_: Implement policies, training, and procedures
5. _PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)_: Use equipment to protect workers (LAST RESORT)

The idea is to start at the top (most effective) and work your way down. PPE is last because it relies on human behavior and equipment failure can put workers at risk 😊.
