As announced by the South African Pharmacy Council, qualifying pharmacists may now apply for temporary Section 22A(15) Permits to deliver a selection of the services available in the PIMART scope of practice.

Doxycycline PEP offers a promising new tool for reducing syphilis and chlamydia, particularly among men who have s*x with men and transgender women at ongoing high risk of STI exposure.

The guideline provides clear, practical direction on eligibility, dosing, counselling, and antimicrobial stewardship, positioning doxycycline PEP as a targeted addition to comprehensive HIV and s*xual health services. The course also provides up-to-date guidance on all available PrEP options, including the newer long-acting agents.

This is a free course for healthcare professionals subject to registration and completion of the course by the end September 2026. This online course is self-paced and will typically take 8 hours to complete.

TB remains a major threat to maternal health in South Africa. Globally, around 200,000 pregnant and postpartum women develop TB each year, with risk significantly higher among women living with HIV. TB affects under 1% of pregnant women, yet contributes to roughly 5% of maternal deaths, and accounted for over 40% of non-pregnancy related infection deaths in South Africa in 2023. Because pregnancy symptoms often mimic TB symptoms, guidelines now recommend a sputum TB NAAT (previously GeneXpert) test at every pregnant woman with HIV's first antenatal visit, even without symptoms.
