Did you know?

The story of the 1976 Student Uprising is often told through the bravery of thousands of young South Africans who stood up against injustice. What is less widely known is that learners with disabilities were also part of this historic movement.

Despite facing additional barriers, many differently abled individuals contributed by helping organize communities, sharing information, and supporting the student movement during a critical moment in South Africa’s history.

Recognizing these contributions reminds us that the struggle for freedom and equality included people of all abilities. Their resilience and courage form an important part of the legacy of 1976.

On 12 May 2026, Grindrod representatives visited learners with disabilities at the PMI / ICAN campus to observe their progress and celebrate their achievements. The visit showcased the learners’ dedication to their studies, with recognition given to those who consistently demonstrated strong attendance and timely submission of work.

As part of the celebration, Grindrod sponsored and awarded tablets to these committed learners, providing them with valuable tools to enhance their learning experience and independence.

This initiative reflects the collaborated commitment between PMI and Grindrod to fostering opportunities for learners with disabilities, ensuring they have access to resources that support both academic success and personal growth.
