Last week I spent 2 days in KZN as a volunteer with Boikanyo, The Dion Herson Foundation. The outreaches are always so rewarding and are primarily focussed on fitting children/ adults who have cerebral palsy with a customized buggy. The dietetic involvement includes screening for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrtion (MAM) . We were fortunate to have received a donation of E'Pap Nutrition and myself and my wonderful colleague Tshepiso Tindisa identified those in need who would most benefit from the additional nutrition support and referred any with SAM or MAM to their local clinics for dietetic follow up. We also provided basic nutrition education and practical tips on how to include protein and how to make pureed fruit/ vegetables .
Many of the more severe malnutrition cases we saw were expereincing a lot of challenges with chewing and swallowing but sadly not all have access to regular speech therapy to assist with swallowing assessment and techniques. There was only one child who had a feeding tube ( gastrostomy) . In this pic below with the help of a translator I was able to speak with this amazing gogo who is providing home blended feeds for her grandchild using a syringe. This is not an easy task even in resource sufficient circumstances and this child is thank G-d growing well thanks to this gogo's love and commitment.
I picked up some helpful tips around gastrostomy tube care from the recent workshop we had in JHB. Now that the child has a buggy, the gogo doesn't have to carry her grandchild on her back all the time and she is less worried that the tube will get dislodged. I sent a pic to Nothando Dladla from First Medical Company who promptly connected me to a rep in KZN and gave me some practical advice I could give to the gogo regarding care around the gastrostomy site itself.
