Your ears don’t “get used to” loud noise. 👂

Something interesting happens when we are regularly exposed to loud sounds: what once felt too loud can start to feel completely normal.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean your ears have adapted. It could mean your hearing is being affected by repeated noise exposure.

Think about it:
🎧 Your headphones gradually getting louder because your usual volume no longer feels loud enough.
🏋️ The music at the gym becoming something you barely notice.
🎶 Standing close to speakers at concerts and no longer finding the sound uncomfortably loud.
🔨 Using power tools without hearing protection because the noise has become “normal”.

Your ears can become accustomed to the sensation of loud sound, but your hearing system is still being exposed to the same potentially damaging levels.

A few simple ways to control your noise exposure:
• Keep personal listening devices at a moderate volume and use volume limits where available.
• Take regular breaks from headphones and noisy environments.
• Move further away from loudspeakers or other noise sources when possible.
• Wear appropriate hearing protection in noisy environments.
• If you need to raise your voice to speak to someone nearby, consider that a sign the environment may be too loud.

And if you notice that you are consistently increasing the volume, struggling to hear speech in background noise, or experiencing ringing or muffled hearing after noise exposure, don’t simply assume your ears have “gotten used to it”.

Your hearing may be telling you something.

Protect your hearing beyond the workplace. 👂🏼

Noise-induced hearing loss isn’t limited to traditionally noisy occupations. The sounds we’re exposed to through hobbies, sport, concerts, motorsport, power tools and other recreational activities can also put our hearing at risk.

The right hearing protection is about more than simply putting something in your ears. These custom earplugs feature a built-in acoustic filter, selected according to the type and level of noise you are exposed to. This allows us to tailor your hearing protection to your specific environment and needs.

Whether you need protection for your profession or your favourite pastime, know your noise and protect your hearing.

Even the most advanced hearing aid will only perform as well as it has been programmed. A proper fitting is about far more than simply turning a device on. It involves carefully adjusting the hearing aid to match your unique hearing loss, lifestyle and listening needs.

The goal is not just to make sounds louder. It is to help you hear speech more clearly, follow conversations with less effort and stay connected to the people and moments that matter most.

If your hearing aids don’t sound quite right, it may not be the technology that’s the problem. A professional fitting and fine-tuning can make all the difference.

That ringing, buzzing or hissing sound you notice after a loud concert, sporting event or night out is called tinnitus. It’s often a sign that your ears have been exposed to sound levels high enough to temporarily stress the delicate hair cells inside the inner ear.

While the ringing may disappear after a few hours or days, repeated exposure to loud noise can cause permanent damage to these tiny sensory cells. Unlike many other cells in the body, they do not regenerate once they are damaged.

The good news? Noise-induced hearing loss is largely preventable.

✔ Wear hearing protection when you’re exposed to loud sounds.
✔ Take regular listening breaks in noisy environments.
✔ Keep the volume at safe levels when using headphones or earbuds.
✔ If ringing persists for more than a day or two, or is accompanied by a sudden change in hearing, have your hearing assessed as soon as possible.

Your ears may recover from one loud event, but repeated exposure can have lasting consequences. Protect your hearing today so you can continue enjoying the sounds you love tomorrow.

If you regularly position yourself so that one ear faces the person speaking, or you always choose the same ear for phone calls, it may be a sign that one ear isn’t hearing as well as the other.

Because the brain is remarkably good at adapting, unilateral (single-sided) hearing loss often develops gradually and can go unnoticed for longer than you might expect. Many people only realise there’s a problem when they struggle to hear in noisy environments, have difficulty telling where sounds are coming from, or notice that conversations are much easier when someone speaks into their “good” ear.

Common signs of unilateral hearing loss include:
• Turning one ear towards people during conversation.
• Difficulty hearing in restaurants or group settings.
• Struggling to locate where sounds are coming from.
• Frequently using the same ear for phone calls.
• A feeling that one ear is blocked or hears less clearly than the other.

While some causes are temporary and easily treated, others require prompt medical attention. A sudden loss of hearing in one ear is a medical emergency and should be assessed immediately, as early treatment offers the best chance of recovery.

A comprehensive hearing assessment can identify whether your hearing differs between ears and help determine the next steps.

Don’t let your “good ear” do all the work.

Many people assume painful, blocked ears during or after flying are simply something they have to put up with. While it’s normal to feel a brief change in pressure during take-off and landing, persistent pain, difficulty “popping” your ears, muffled hearing or symptoms that linger long after your flight may point to Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD).

The Eustachian tubes are small passages that connect the middle ear to the back of the nose. Their job is to equalise pressure on either side of the eardrum. When they don’t open and close properly, pressure can build up, causing discomfort, pain, a feeling of fullness, popping sounds or reduced hearing.

Although ETD is common in children, adults can experience it too, particularly during air travel, with allergies, sinus problems or after an upper respiratory infection.

The good news is that Eustachian tube function can be assessed. At JHB Audiology, we use specialised middle ear tests to evaluate how well your ears are functioning. If we identify concerns that require medical management, we can refer you to an ENT specialist for further assessment and treatment.

You don’t have to accept painful flights as “normal”. If your ears are causing you problems, it’s worth having them checked.
