People feel before they think
Emotions play a massive role. They act as our built-in survival and navigation system. You cannot go without it. They allow us to instantly evaluate situations, make rapid decisions without overthinking, and communicate our needs to others.
You cannot bury emotions, they are biological responses, not physical objects. When you suppress them, you simply trap them in your mind and body. This bottled-up pressure eventually explodes, fuels anxiety, or manifests as physical ailments like tension headaches and chronic fatigue
The "Beach Ball" Effect:
Think of an emotion as a beach ball. The harder you force it underwater, the more forcefully it eventually shoots to the surface—often in explosive, out-of-character reactions.
Emotional Numbing:
You cannot selectively bury only the bad feelings. When you numb yourself to pain, you also dull your capacity for joy, passion, and genuine connection.
People avoid feeling emotions. Substances are initially used to escape psychological pain, trauma, or stress. Over time, drugs or alcohol alter the brain's reward system, making natural emotions feel either overwhelmingly intense or completely flat, creating a dependence on substances to feel normal.
Unresolved trauma rewires the brain, often making the threat-detection center (the amygdala) hyperactive, while the rational part of the brain (the prefrontal cortex) becomes underactive. This creates triggers, flashbacks, and difficulty regulating emotions in everyday situations.
