World Breast Cancer Research Day 🎀 | Research that reaches beyond the laboratory
Today, on World Breast Cancer Research Day, we celebrate the research that continues to change what we know about breast cancer — from early detection and treatment to recovery, quality of life and survivorship.
But research doesn’t only happen in laboratories.
It also happens on the ground — in private practices, rehabilitation centres, gyms and consulting rooms — where research meets real people.
As an exercise oncology specialist in private practice, I see the importance of translating scientific evidence into something meaningful for the person sitting in front of me.
Every patient responds differently to cancer and its treatment. Fatigue, loss of strength, neuropathy, reduced bone density, lymphoedema, changes in body composition, anxiety and reduced confidence can all influence the ability to exercise and recover.
This is where clinical practice becomes an important field of research in its own right.
It is about asking: 🔬 What does the research tell us? 👩‍⚕️ How does that evidence apply to this individual? 🏃‍♀️ What happens when we put it into practice? 📊 What can we measure, learn and improve?
Patients should never feel like guinea pigs in a laboratory. Instead, they should benefit from research that has been thoughtfully translated into safe, individualised and evidence-based care.
And practitioners have a responsibility to keep learning from the people we work with — to observe outcomes, collect meaningful data, question what we do and contribute to the growing body of knowledge.
Because the future of breast cancer care isn't created only in a laboratory.
It is also shaped in every consultation, every rehabilitation session and every patient who helps us understand what better care can look like.
🎀 Research matters. Evidence matters. But most importantly, the person behind the research matters.

Always Happy to contribute to this Magazine, and especially since its
🌿 Cancer Survivors Month 🌿

Did you know that exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve quality of life after a cancer diagnosis?
*Read the article in the link*
Research continues to show that regular physical activity can reduce cancer-related fatigue, improve physical function, enhance emotional wellbeing, and help survivors regain confidence in their bodies.
Every step, stretch, and strengthening exercise counts.
Movement is not about doing more—it's about living better.

Wendy Vermaak explains why exercise should be viewed as an essential part of cancer treatment.

Healing in Every Step 💗
This past Saturday, we had the incredible privilege of joining forces with PinkDrive for a truly special healing hike.
With 50 amazing participants, we spent the morning moving, connecting, and embracing the power of nature together. 🌿
It was a beautiful reminder that exercise is medicine — especially in cancer care. Movement not only strengthens the body, but also restores hope, builds community, and nurtures the mind.
To every person who showed up, walked, and shared in this journey — thank you. Your strength and courage inspire us daily.
Here’s to many more moments of healing, one step at a time. 💫

4 February | World Cancer Day
Today we pause to acknowledge the millions of individuals and families impacted by cancer. Behind every diagnosis is a name, a story, a mother, a father, a child, a friend.
As a biokineticist working in exercise oncology, I am continually reminded that cancer care is not only about treatment — it is about dignity, strength, support, and hope. Movement becomes more than physical activity; it becomes medicine. It becomes courage. It becomes a way of saying, “My body is still capable. My life is still purposeful.”
World Cancer Day is a reminder that we each have a role to play — whether that is raising awareness, supporting research, walking alongside someone in their treatment journey, or advocating for integrative care that includes exercise as part of standard oncology treatment.
To those currently in treatment: you are not defined by your diagnosis.
To survivors: your resilience is powerful.
To families and caregivers: your quiet strength does not go unseen.
Let us continue working toward care that treats the whole person — body, mind, and spirit.
