AHF established its first treatment site outside the U.S, in 2002 in Umlazi, a township south of Durban. This was a collaboration between AHF and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. The Girls Act members from KZN were invited by Impact Drivers to a UKZN HPP workshop to learn about the progress being made in HIV research.

The visit covered HIV prevalence in South Africa, the impact of HIV on women and the body, and ongoing research towards finding a cure. Although a cure has not yet been found, the research provides hope for the future. Members also had the opportunity to visit the UKZN laboratories where this important research takes place.

Wellness Wednesday

Using a condom correctly and consistently can help reduce the risk of HIV and other s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), such as syphilis.

Make condoms part of your wellness routine:

- Use a new condom every time you have s*x
- Check the expiry date and packaging
- Use it correctly from start to finish
- Keep condoms somewhere cool and dry
- Get tested regularly for STIs, including syphilis, as condoms may not fully protect against syphilis if sores or affected skin are outside the area covered by the condom.

The 2nd World Sexual Health Assembly, convened by the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) and hosted by the African Institute for Sexual and Gender Health, in association with the Africa Centre for Inclusive Health Management at Stellenbosch University, was held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, from 3–4 September 2026, with a pre-meeting on 2 September.

The pre-meeting included an expert consultation on developing Global Standards in Professional Education in Sexual Health, an international collaborative project convened by WAS.

AHF was proudly represented by Dr Logandran Naidoo, National Medical Director for South Africa and Global Scientific Committee Chair, and Ngaatendwe Panelope Hazell Murombedzi, Regional Advocacy and Policy Manager for Southern Africa.

Their participation highlights AHF’s commitment to advancing s*xual health, inclusive healthcare, evidence-based practice, and equitable access to quality health services.
