Could a Hock Brace Help a Dog with a Torn Achilles Tendon?

A torn Achilles tendon (also called the common calcaneal tendon) is a serious injury that can make it difficult or even impossible for a dog to walk normally. You may notice:
-Walking on the entire back foot instead of the toes
-Difficulty standing or pushing off the affected leg—-Swelling around the hock (ankle)
-Lameness or reluctance to exercise

Treatment often depends on the severity of the injury. While complete ruptures frequently require surgery, a custom hock brace can play an important role in many cases, including:
✔️ Supporting the tendon during healing
✔️ Protecting the repair after surgery
✔️ Managing partial tears conservatively
✔️ Providing long-term stability when surgery isn’t possible

A well-fitted hock brace helps control movement at the joint, reducing strain on the healing tendon while allowing your dog to remain as active as safely possible under veterinary guidance.

If your dog has been diagnosed with an Achilles tendon injury, we’d be happy to discuss whether a custom hock brace could form part of their rehabilitation.

Healing Every Step of the Way ❤️

He is currently wearing a custom-made cervical support collar designed to stabilise his neck while he waits for the specialised surgical implants needed for his procedure to arrive.

Although surgery is the long-term solution, keeping the neck stable in the meantime is critical. This custom orthosis helps:
• Reduce excessive neck movement
• Improve comfort and minimise pain
• Protect the injured area from further damage
• Provide safe support during this waiting period

Every patient has a unique journey, and sometimes the right orthotic device can make all the difference in maintaining quality of life before surgery and during recovery.

At Animal Care Division, we’re proud to work alongside veterinarians to create custom orthotic solutions that help pets move, heal and live more comfortably.

🐾 Did you know? Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears are one of the most common orthopaedic injuries in dogs.

Research shows that:
📊 Over two-thirds of CCL tears are complete ruptures, causing significant instability in the knee. (Canine Cruciate Registry)

📊 Around one in three dogs with a complete CCL tear also has damage to the meniscus, making the injury even more painful and increasing the risk of long-term arthritis. (Canine Cruciate Registry)

📊 Many dogs that tear one CCL will eventually injure the opposite knee, making early management and ongoing support especially important. (PubMed)

Signs to look out for:
🐕 Sudden limping on a back leg
🐕 Difficulty getting up or climbing stairs
🐕 Reluctance to run, jump or play
🐕 Sitting with one leg stretched out to the side

A custom-made stifle brace can help stabilise the joint, reduce pain and improve mobility. Whether used as part of conservative treatment or during post-surgical rehabilitation, the right brace can help your dog stay active and comfortable while healing.

Every dog deserves the chance to move with confidence again. ❤️

Not every limp needs surgery. 🐾

This little dachshund is wearing a custom stifle brace from Animal Care Division after straining a cruciate ligament in his knee.

Cruciate ligament injuries can cause pain, instability and reduced mobility, making everyday activities like walking, running and playing difficult. In the right cases, a custom orthotic brace can help provide support to the joint, improve stability, reduce discomfort and assist during recovery.

Every dog is different, which is why each brace is individually designed and fitted to provide the best possible support for their specific needs.

Seeing our patients regain confidence, comfort and independence is what makes it all worthwhile. ❤️

If your dog is struggling with a cruciate ligament injury, contact us to find out whether a custom stifle brace could help.

The fetlock joint on a horse (the “ankle” area above the hoof) is one of the most highly loaded joints in the body. A brace or supportive device is usually used when the structures around the fetlock need protection, stabilization, or controlled movement during healing or performance.

Common reasons include:

Injury support

A brace may help protect:

* Suspensory ligament injuries
* Flexor tendon injuries
* Sesamoid injuries
* Collateral ligament sprains
* Mild joint instability or hyperextension

A brace can mechanically limit that excessive motion and reduce strain.

We are currently restricted as much as we can to allow healing, before moving over to an alternative.
