Could a Hock Brace Help a Dog with a Torn Achilles Tendon?
A torn Achilles tendon (also called the common calcaneal tendon) is a serious injury that can make it difficult or even impossible for a dog to walk normally. You may notice:
-Walking on the entire back foot instead of the toes
-Difficulty standing or pushing off the affected leg—-Swelling around the hock (ankle)
-Lameness or reluctance to exercise
Treatment often depends on the severity of the injury. While complete ruptures frequently require surgery, a custom hock brace can play an important role in many cases, including:
✔️ Supporting the tendon during healing
✔️ Protecting the repair after surgery
✔️ Managing partial tears conservatively
✔️ Providing long-term stability when surgery isn’t possible
A well-fitted hock brace helps control movement at the joint, reducing strain on the healing tendon while allowing your dog to remain as active as safely possible under veterinary guidance.
If your dog has been diagnosed with an Achilles tendon injury, we’d be happy to discuss whether a custom hock brace could form part of their rehabilitation.
