It is a common misconception that all pain running down the leg is sciatica. There are other differential diagnoses that could mimic similar pain (e.g degenerative hip pathologies, piriformis syndrome…)
HOWEVER,
Sciatica, refers to an irritation or injury directly involving the sciatic nerve. This can lead to pain, parathesia/numbness down the back of the leg.
The roots of the nerve begins from the L4-S3 nerve roots which converge at the pelvis and run below the piriformis muscle down the back of the leg to the foot.
The most common cause of sciatica involves a disc bulge, irritating the root of the sciatic nerve. But there are also strong correlations to show that individuals with poor lifestyle habits (smoking, inactivity, increased BMI) have a high risk of developing sciatica. Occupations that involve repetitive heavy lifting, bending over and prolonged standing are also risk factors for sciatic nerve pathology.
Conservative treatment is generally the first line of management. However, it is important to consult with your doctor or physiotherapist to first discern whether you have sciatica or not to ensure appropriate treatment measures.
So the main take home message?
Stay active, with modifications to aggravating movements and activities as well as high risk lifestyle factors.
