What I wish people knew about cleft lip and/or palate for World Cleft Awareness Day 🌎

Surgery is part of the journey, but it’s not the whole story. So much more goes into cleft care from feeding support, dental care, orthodontics, multiple surgeries over many years, speech therapy, audiology, mental and emotional support…and dare I say more!

In talking to many parents at CleftCon this weekend, I realized how much this misconception impacts families. Cleft care is an ongoing journey and families aren’t looking for pity, rather understanding.

We are here to provide accurate, up-to-date information, connect you with support networks, and share the experiences of families and individuals with Down syndrome.

A diagnosis can bring many questions, but you do not have to navigate the journey alone. There is a community ready to support, inform, and celebrate with you every step of the way.

People with Down syndrome can and do lead meaningful, fulfilling lives. Access to accurate information and support can make all the difference.
