Key Viral Trends from the Latest NICD Respiratory Pathogens Report

Recent data from the NICD report shows three important viral trends in clinics and schools:

1️⃣Influenza A: In public clinics, the common strain is H1N1 (swine flu), while private doctors see more H3N2. Both strains cause quick high fevers and body aches.
2️⃣RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): This virus is the main reason for bronchiolitis in babies under one year, leading to thick mucus, coughing, and breathing problems.
3️⃣Adenovirus & Gastro Clusters: Many toddlers aged 1 to 5 have respiratory symptoms with stomach cramps or vomiting.
🛑 When to See a Doctor Immediately
Most viral infections can be managed with rest and hydration at home. However, seek urgent medical care if you notice any of these warning signs:
‼️Flared nostrils or chest “sucking in” under the ribs while breathing
‼️Rapid, shallow breathing or wheezing sounds
Inability to keep fluids down, leading to fewer than three wet nappies a day
‼️A high fever that refuses to drop even after administering paracetamol
🛡️ Quick Prevention Tips
✅It is not too late for the flu vaccine: The current season will run through August. The vaccine protects against the currently circulating dominant H1N1 and H3N2 strains.
✅Prioritise hand wash.
✅Let’s keep our children warm and healthy

# World Asthma Day: A Call to Action for Every Child

This year’s theme serves as an essential reminder: every child deserves access to the right treatment to remain healthy and active.

As a paediatrician, I frequently observe that parents often depend solely on “rescue” inhalers. While these inhalers offer immediate relief, they do not address the underlying inflammation. For many children, daily anti-inflammatory “preventer” inhalers are crucial for leading a life without limitations.

Is Your Child’s Asthma Well-Managed?

Look out for these indicators of effective asthma management:
✅ No nighttime awakenings due to coughing.
✅ Use of a rescue inhaler less than twice per week.
✅ Ability to keep up with friends during sports and play.
✅ No missed school days or emergency room visits.

Three Steps for Parents Today:

Identify Triggers: Common triggers include dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and sudden weather changes.
Master the Technique: Ensure your child uses a spacer with their inhaler to help the medication reach deep into the lungs, where it’s most needed.
Update Your Action Plan: Every child should have a written Asthma Action Plan that is shared with their school or daycare.
Let’s work together to ensure asthma never hinders them from pursuing their dreams.

This 2026, the message is clear: Now We Can. Now We Must. 🌍🦟
With new vaccines and next-gen tools, we are closer than ever to a malaria-free future for our children. But progress starts at home! 🏠

How you can protect your little ones TODAY:
🔴Test Before You Treat: Not every fever is malaria. Always get a professional test before starting medication.
🔴Net Up Every Night: Sleep under insecticide-treated nets—they remain our strongest shield.
🔴Clear the Buzz: Remove stagnant water around your home where mosquitoes breed.
🔴Act Fast: If your child has a fever, chills, or unusual fatigue, don't wait.
🔴Early treatment saves lives.
Ending malaria is no longer just a dream; it’s a responsibility we all share. Let’s protect the next generation. 💙

May every dream you hold come to reality this year.💚

World Haemophilia Day is observed on April 17 to raise awareness about haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. The 2026 theme, “Diagnosis: First step to care,” emphasizes that over 75% of individuals with hemophilia are undiagnosed.

🔴What is Hemophilia?
A rare genetic disorder where blood doesn’t clot properly due to insufficient clotting-factor proteins.
Types include Type A (Factor VIII deficiency) and Type B (Factor IX deficiency).
Primarily affects males as it is X-linked, but females can also be carriers or affected.

‼️Signs to Watch for in Kids:
1️⃣Frequent or severe nosebleeds.
2️⃣Easy or unexplained bruising.
3️⃣Swollen, painful joints.
4️⃣Prolonged bleeding from minor injuries.

❣️Living as a “Hemo Hero”:
With proper diagnosis and treatment, such as clotting factor infusions, children with hemophilia can lead active, independent lives.

Embracing Neurodiversity on World Autism Awareness Day

As a paediatrician, my days are spent witnessing the numerous ways children develop, learn, and perceive the world around them. On this World Autism Awareness Day, I want to honour the unique strengths and perspectives of our neurodivergent community.

Autism exists on a spectrum, signifying that each child’s journey is uniquely their own. This year’s UN theme, “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” serves as a reminder that meaningful progress involves moving beyond mere “awareness” to embrace active acceptance and inclusion.

What we can do:

✅Listen & Learn: Take a moment to understand how sensory sensitivities or communication differences might impact a child’s daily experiences.
✅Advocate for Inclusion: Support inclusive environments in schools and public spaces where every child feels a sense of belonging.
✅Celebrate Milestones: To all parents and caregivers—you’re doing an amazing job. Celebrate every achievement, whether big or small.
✅Early identification and support can make a tremendous difference, but so can a community that prioritizes kindness over stigma. Let us strive to create a world where every mind is cherished for what it truly is: a masterpiece.
