🎗Together Against Leukaemia: A Message from the Oncology Team
Every 3 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia. For many of these patients, a bone marrow transplant is not just a treatment option—it is their only chance at a cure.

As oncologists, we see the bravery of patients fighting this disease every day. But medicine alone isn't always enough. We need you.
💡 The Reality of Bone Marrow Stem Cell Donation
Many people hold back from joining the donor registry due to common misconceptions.
Here are the facts:
➡Genetic matches are rare: 70% of patients cannot find a matching donor within their own family and rely on strangers.
➡Ethnicity matters: Patients are most likely to find a match within their own ethnic background. Diverse donors are urgently needed.
✅It is usually painless: 85% of donations are done via a non-surgical process similar to giving blood (PBSC).
✅Your body recovers quickly: Your body replenishes the donated bone marrow cells within just a few weeks.
🩸 How You Can Save a Life
Swabbing your cheek takes less than a minute, but it could grant someone a lifetime.

👋Swab: Complete the quick swab at home and mail it back.
⏰Wait: Stay on the registry until you are matched with a patient in need.
🦸You hold the power to delete blood cancer. Consider registering today.

Today, we are shedding light on a critical cancer link that many South Africans aren't aware of: the connection between Hepatitis and Liver Cancer.

As our country observed World Hepatitis Day yesterday, the World Health Organization reminds us that chronic Hepatitis B and C infections are the leading causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer globally. In fact, they account for the vast majority of primary liver cancers worldwide.

The good news?💫 This type of cancer is highly preventable.
By taking control of your viral health today, you are actively lowering your future oncology risks. Here is how you can protect yourself:
✅Get Tested: Ask your practitioner for a simple Hepatitis B and C screening. Early detection allows for treatments that prevent liver damage.
✅Get Vaccinated: Ensure your family and children have completed their routine Hepatitis B vaccination series.
✅Know the Symptoms: Chronic liver issues can remain silent for years. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or unexplained weight loss.
✅Preventative care is cancer care. Discuss your screening options with your physician today.

Sarcoma is often called a "forgotten cancer" because it is rare and frequently misdiagnosed.

Sarcomas are cancers that develop in the body's connective tissues, including muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, bones, and cartilage. Because they can appear anywhere in the body and often mimic harmless bumps, raising awareness is crucial for early detection and saving lives.

Here is what our oncology team wants you to know about recognizing and acting on the warning signs.
🎗️ Fast Facts About Sarcoma
Two Main Types: It is broadly divided into Soft Tissue Sarcoma and Bone Sarcoma.
Hidden Monsters: Soft tissue sarcomas often grow deeply hidden in limbs before showing symptoms.

All Ages Affected: While rare in adults (1% of cancers), it makes up about 15% of childhood cancers.
Early Detection Wins: Finding a sarcoma early significantly improves treatment success rates.
🔍 Warning Signs: The "BSG" Rule
Check your body regularly and remember these key indicators:
Bigger: Any lump that is growing in size, especially if it is larger than a golf ball (5cm).
Sore: Any new, unexplained bone pain or joint swelling, particularly at night or during rest.
Deep: A lump that feels deep within the muscle, rather than just under the skin's surface.

🛑 When to Schedule an Evaluation
Do not wait for pain to appear. Most soft tissue sarcomas are completely painless in their early stages. You should get checked immediately if you notice:
➡A new, growing lump anywhere on your body.
➡Persistent, worsening bone pain that does not improve with rest.
➡A lump that returns after being surgically removed.

Prevention is our most powerful tool against cervical cancer.
As oncologists, we see firsthand how early detection changes stories. Cervical screening (a Pap smear or HPV test) can detect cell changes before they ever turn into cancer.
During Cervical Screening Awareness Week, our message is simple: don't delay your appointment. It is a quick test that truly saves lives.
