🗓June is Men’s Health Month ♂ in South Africa, and as a urologist, I need to remind you that ignoring early warning signs is the biggest risk to your health.
Traditional expectations often push South African men to bottle up physical and mental struggles. True strength means taking control of your health before a condition becomes severe.
✅This June, let us change the narrative and normalize medical check-ups.

🚫 Stop Normalising These Symptoms
1️⃣Waking up multiple times a night to pass urine
2️⃣Pain, lumps, or swelling in your testicles.
3️⃣Sudden changes in sexual performance or erectile function
4️⃣Chronic fatigue or a rapidly expanding waistline
🔻Do not wait for pain or severe illness to strike before booking an appointment.
✅Use this month to schedule a screening at your nearest clinic or urology practice.

Think smoking only impacts your chest? Think again—your bladder pays the ultimate price.
Key points include:
🔻Concentrated Toxins: Chemicals inhaled are absorbed into the blood, filtered by the kidneys, and concentrated in urine.
🔻Bladder Lining Damage: The bladder holds these carcinogens, leading to cellular mutations.
🔻Erectile Dysfunction: Smoking harms blood vessels necessary for healthy pelvic blood flow.
➡Ultimately, smoking harms the urinary system, emphasizing the importance of quitting to protect bladder health.

The "urologist diet" consists of targeted nutritional guidelines aimed at protecting the urinary tract, focusing on clear fluid intake, reducing sodium, and limiting animal protein to prevent kidney stones, soothe bladders, and support prostate health.

Key components include:

1️⃣Preventing Kidney Stones:
Increase fluid intake, especially water, to maintain clear urine.
Lower sodium intake to reduce calcium in urine.
Moderate animal protein consumption to decrease urine acidity.
Ensure adequate dietary calcium from dairy.
Boost citrates with lemon or lime in water.
2️⃣Soothe Bladder Issues:
Eliminate caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners.
Avoid acidic and spicy foods, like citrus fruits and tomatoes.
Favor low-acid foods such as pears and whole grains.
Increase fiber intake to prevent constipation.
3️⃣Maintaining Prostate Health:
Consume cooked tomatoes for lycopene.
Include cruciferous vegetables like broccoli.
Snack on zinc-rich pumpkin seeds.
Choose healthy fats, like omega-3 sources, over red meats.

World Hypertension Day.
Hypertension is a major cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a critical overlap for urologists and nephrologists.
“High blood pressure doesn't just affect your heart—it’s a silent threat to your kidneys. Over time, hypertension can damage the small blood vessels in the kidneys, leading to failure."
Know your numbers, have your blood pressure checked regularly

It’s Allergy Awareness Week, and you might be wondering: “Why is my urologist talking about hay fever?” 🤧🚽
Most people think of red eyes and runny noses, but as a urologist, I see the "hidden" side of allergy season. Your bladder and your sinuses have more in common than you’d think!
Here is why your urological health matters this week:
The "Sneeze-Leak" Connection: If you struggle with Stress Incontinence, allergy season is your toughest opponent. Frequent coughing and sneezing put massive sudden pressure on your pelvic floor, which can lead to embarrassing leaks.
The Histamine Flare: Did you know your bladder has mast cells just like your nose? For patients with Interstitial Cystitis (IC) or Overactive Bladder (OAB), high pollen counts can actually trigger bladder pain and urgency. When your body releases histamine, it can irritate the bladder lining, too.
The Medication Trap: Many over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants can have "drying" side effects that make it harder to urinate, especially for men with an enlarged prostate (BPH). In some cases, these meds can even lead to acute urinary retention.
My "Pro-Urology" Allergy Tips:
✅ Hydrate: Don’t cut back on water to avoid leaks; concentrated urine actually irritates the bladder more.
✅ The "Knack" Technique: Try a quick pelvic floor squeeze (Kegel) right before you sneeze to support your bladder.
✅ Check Your Meds: If you have prostate issues, talk to your doctor before starting a new allergy pill.
Don't let your bladder pay the price for the pollen! 🌸

Beyond the fever and chills, malaria can be a silent threat to your kidneys. 🩺💧
As a urologist, I often see the "behind-the-scenes" damage malaria causes. Severe cases, particularly those caused by P. falciparum, can lead to Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), glomerulonephritis, and a condition known as "Blackwater Fever"—where dark, coca-cola coloured urine signals severe red blood cell destruction.

This 2026, the theme is "Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must." It’s a reminder that we have the vaccines and tools to stop this disease before it reaches your vital organs.

Advice for Staying Safe:
🔴Watch Your Urine: If you have a fever and notice very dark or tea-coloured urine, seek emergency medical care immediately. It’s a major "danger sign" for kidney involvement.
🔴Stay Hydrated: Fever and sweating lead to dehydration, which makes kidney injury more likely if you do catch malaria.
🔴Complete Your Treatment: Don't stop your meds just because the fever is gone. 🔴Unfinished treatment can lead to chronic complications.
✅Let’s use the science we have to protect our health from the inside out. Now we can end malaria. Now we must. 🌍🚫🦟

Medical circumcision for young boys, often referred to as Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC), is widely recommended by urologists and public health bodies like the South African National Department of Health (NDoH) as a safe, sterile alternative to traditional practices.
From a clinical perspective, a medical setting prioritizes safety and hygiene to prevent the "botched" outcomes sometimes associated with unregulated traditional ceremonies.

Health Benefits for Boys
Choosing a medical route ensures the full suite of documented health benefits:
✅Infection Prevention: Reduces the risk of HIV acquisition by approximately 60% and significantly lowers the chance of other STIs.
✅Hygiene & Comfort: Makes daily hygiene easier and treats conditions like phimosis (painfully tight fo****in).
✅Cancer Protection: Virtually eliminates the risk of pe**le cancer and reduces the risk of cervical cancer in future partners

As the air turns crisp, remember to maintain your hydration habits even as the leaves fall!
In cooler weather, it's normal to feel less thirsty, but your kidneys and bladder still require ample water to operate optimally. Staying hydrated provides several benefits:
✅ Helps flush out bacteria to prevent UTIs.
✅ Lowers the risk of kidney stones.
✅ Prevents bladder irritation caused by concentrated urine.

⭐Pro tip: If cold water doesn't sound appealing, consider enjoying warm herbal teas or lemon water to keep those fluids flowing! 🍋☕
