Frances Baard District's Galeshewe Day Hospital was a burst of colour and vintage glam today as staff members stepped back into the 1960s, draped in polka dots, floral prints, high waistlines and bold headwraps to celebrate Women's Month. The celebration was more than just fashion, it was a powerful statement of joy, unity and pride as female healthcare workers took a moment to celebrate themselves and each other.

We celebrate Women's Month because of the fearless women in healthcare who paved the way long before us. We remember the nurses, the community health workers, the midwives and the doctors who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions to ensure that women's health, dignity and rights were respected. It is because of their sacrifice, their resilience and their dedication that today we can work, lead, and be celebrated as women in the health sector.

Today's 60s-themed celebration was a beautiful reminder of how far we have come and how much stronger we are when we stand together. At Galeshewe Day Hospital, women showed up for each other, not just as colleagues, but as sisters. In a profession that demands so much emotionally and physically, that sisterhood is our strength. When one woman rises, she pulls another with her.

As the Department of Health, we want to remind every woman that you are seen, you are valued, and you are loved. It is important that we continue to love each other, support each other, and protect each other's light. A kind word, a helping hand, and a genuine compliment can go a long way in healing another woman.

To all the queens in the health sector, and especially the queens of Galeshewe Day Hospital, thank you for your service, your beauty, your strength and your heart. You are the backbone of our health system. Happy Women's Month!

[📍IN PICTORIAL 📸] FRANCES BAARD HEALTH DISTRICT HOSTS BASIC TB TRAINING WEEK 🫁📊📈

The Northern Cape Department of Health, Frances Baard District, is currently hosting a week-long Basic Tuberculosis (TB) Training programme for healthcare workers across the district. The training, which commenced earlier this week, is today in its fourth day and continues to demonstrate strong participation and commitment from frontline staff.

This Basic TB Training forms a critical component of the District’s strategy to strengthen TB prevention, diagnosis and management at primary health care level. The programme aims to equip nurses, clinicians and community health workers with updated clinical knowledge, including TB screening and early case detection, treatment protocols, adherence counselling, infection prevention and control, and the management of drug-resistant TB in line with the latest National Department of Health guidelines.

The importance of this training cannot be overstated. Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in the province, and well-capacitated healthcare workers are central to breaking the chain of transmission. By investing in foundational skills, the District is enhancing its capacity to reduce treatment default rates, improve patient outcomes and ultimately lower TB incidence within our communities.

The Frances Baard District commends all participating healthcare workers for their dedication to continuous professional development, as well as the facilitators for their expert contribution. The District remains committed to strengthening its health systems through ongoing training and capacity building initiatives.

The Northern Cape Department of Health mourns the passing of Mr. Anthony “Coach” Kgano, a cherished member of our team who served with humility and dedication at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital. Beyond his valued role within the hospital, he was also a passionate fitness instructor, inspiring both colleagues and the wider community to embrace healthier, active lives.His contributions within the department and beyond reflect a life devoted to service, care, and upliftment.

His legacy will endure in the institution he supported and in the countless lives he touched through his commitment to wellness.We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. The Northern Cape Department of Health - Frances Baard District is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of our Community Health Workers (CHW) from Pampierstad, Mr. Thabo Makheta.

Mr. Makheta passed away on 15 August 2026.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire Pampierstad community during this difficult time. His dedication and service to community health will be fondly remembered.

[📍IN PICTORIAL 📸] MAGARENG & PHOKWANE SUB-DISTRICT PERFORMANCE REVIEW – FRANCES BAARD DISTRICT 📈📊👥

The Northern Cape Department of Health: Frances Baard District held its Quarter 1 Performance Review today at the Hartswater Municipal Library in the Phokwane Sub-District. The session covered both Magareng and Phokwane Sub-Districts and was chaired by Dr. L. Diphatse.

Presentations were received from Allied Health Services, Pharmaceutical Services, Emergency Medical Services, and Quality Assurance. A dedicated session was also held on the Quality Improvement Plans for poorly performing indicators. These review platforms are critical as they promote transparency, accountability, and shared learning. By openly assessing performance and challenges, we strengthen teamwork, identify gaps early, and support one another in delivering quality health services to our communities.

We commend Mr. Joka, the District Director, for his decisive leadership and commitment to driving performance improvement across the district. His guidance continues to ensure that reviews remain solution-focused and that every team member understands their role in achieving the district’s health priorities.

With the conclusion of Sub-District reviews for all four Sub-Districts — Sol Plaatje, Magareng, Dikgatlong, and Phokwane — the district now proceeds to the District Performance Review. The Sub-District engagements have been instrumental in preparing us for the district-level review, as they enable us to consolidate data, address challenges at local level, and align on priority actions to improve service delivery across Frances Baard District.
