As the weather begins warming up around Kokstad and surrounding farming areas, people may start spending more time outdoors, and encounters with snakes can happen.

If someone is bitten, panic can lead to dangerous decisions.

DO:

🐍 Move away from the snake and get to a safe place
🚑 Seek emergency medical assistance immediately
🧘 Keep the person as calm and still as possible
💍 Remove rings, watches or tight items from the affected limb before swelling develops
📝 Remember what the snake looked like from a safe distance, but do not try to catch or kill it

DON'T:

❌ Cut the bite
❌ Suck out the venom

❌ Use an electric shock
❌ Give alcohol
❌ Apply a tight tourniquet unless specifically instructed by appropriately trained medical personnel for the situation

South Africa is experiencing a significant spell of severe winter weather, with warnings for disruptive snow, heavy rain, damaging winds, very cold conditions and dangerous travel conditions in parts of the country. KwaZulu-Natal motorists have specifically been urged to exercise extreme caution because of snowfall.

At ResQMed, we want our Kokstad community and everyone travelling through affected areas to put safety first.

🌧️ Avoid unnecessary travel. If conditions deteriorate, rather delay your trip.

🚗 If you must drive, slow down. Increase your following distance and avoid sudden braking, especially on wet, icy or snow-covered roads.
